Pause for Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:
听
Thirty years ago, in March 1988, I decided to become a Muslim. I was 16, and let鈥檚 just say鈥攅uphemistically鈥攖hat it was a somewhat controversial decision.
听
Yet for me, Islam presented a simple, powerful way of understanding and connecting to The Essence, the Uncaused Cause of All Creation: to God.
听
For my Christian family, there was a lot of, what I later recognised, as grief. Islam seemed a world away from their world, and to see them hurt was incredibly painful in itself.
听
Even my beloved grandmother struggled with the fact that I looked 鈥渇oreign鈥. Now Nana had been born in 1909 into a very homogenous Britain. Indeed, she would recall how just after World War One, her entire street came out to see a member of the Indian Army regiment walk past. And yet, through our mutual love and perseverance, she was able to see that I had not changed my essence. And at my wedding, five years later, she gave a speech declaring: 鈥淚 love your way of life, and the person that you are.鈥 She could say this because she could see that we were both striving to connect to God in our own different ways. Indeed, all my family were reconciled to my faith.
听
However, many could not see past some of my outer changes. The scarf being the most obvious.
听
I was spat at in the street. Called a desecrator of Churches, an infidel. And even attempts were made to pull off my attire.
听
In the 30 years that have past, the narrative and environment has become even more hostile. International events have made anti-Muslim hatred a socially acceptable position in some quarters. I experience this 鈥 personally, physically. It worries me, less for me, and more for my children.
听
And yet, I remain committed to that decision I made as a teenager. My faith sustains me. It connects me to The One, The Essence, which unites all of creation. The Qur鈥檃n says that God could have created us all into a single undiverse community, but God chose otherwise.
听
And I pray that we are all able to see and love our common humanity, regardless of difference, and the varied ways we may approach The One.
