Pause for Thought

Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison:

Ìý

Tomorrow is a big day for Hindus all over the world – it’s the spring festival of Holi, also known as that day when everyone throws coloured paint at each other. It’s a pretty fun thing to do if you’re in a hot country where spring has actually arrived, and everyone is wearing white, and the inside of your house doesn’t have to be covered in plastic sheets. My brother in law was once in India for Holi and he got doused in green dye which didn’t wash off for more than a week! For us chilly folk in the UK, it can be a bit more of an understated affair – a little smear of magenta on the cheek, a little puff of blue water based powder paint – quite tame really!

Ìý

In India, and in many other countries around the world, friends, strangers, rich or poor, all genders, all ages – everyone joins in and everyone is fair game. All in celebration of the new season arriving, and the blossoming of life that comes with it.

In the specific tradition that I come from, the full moon night of Holi always coincides with the celebration of the advent of a great saint and avatar called Shri Chaitanya.

Tomorrow I’ll be thinking even more about his most important teaching: that to truly know God, and to truly know myself, it’s essential to be deeply humble and unfailingly tolerant.

Ìý

ÌýHumility and tolerance are not things that I hear about so much in our wider world. It can feel like swimming upstream to try and develop those qualities when from all sides – media, advertising, relationship advice -Ìý I’m hearing – you should have exactly what you desire, because you are great, you’ve got the power and you most definitely deserve it!

Ìý

As I understand it, humility and tolerance don’t mean thinking less of myself, but thinking of myself less – spending more energy thinking of how I can serve others.

I’ve been fortunate to meet some people in my life that live and breathe this. Remembering them brought to mind that whether in hours or weeks - colours will wash off –Ìý but a humble heart reveals the true inner colour of a person, in all its brilliance – no dry cleaning required.
