Episode 5
Jools is joined by Ibibio Sound Machine, 10cc, New Orleans-based Benjamin Booker, Kentucky singer-songwriter Joan Shelley, Canadian duo Japandroids and singer-songwriter Sigrid.
Joining Jools on this week's show are Ibibio Sound Machine. Fronted by London-born Nigerian singer Eno Williams, the band mix African and electronic elements inspired by the golden era of West African funk and disco. They perform a couple of songs from their second LP Uyai.
Known in the late 70s for their array of chart-topping singles including I'm Not in Love and Dreadlock Holiday, English art-rock band 10cc make their debut on the show. Led by founding member Graham Gouldman - known in his own right as a songwriter of great standing since the 60s - together with two members that have been around on and off since the late 70s in drummer Paul Burgess and guitarist Rick Fenn.
Returning to the show is New Orleans-based musician Benjamin Booker, who is on the verge of releasing his second album Witness, which sees him digging deep into his passion for eccentric soul, R&B and blues, while never straying too far from the garage-punk intensity of his self-titled 2014 debut. Two more debuts on the show arrive courtesy of singer-songwriter Joan Shelley from Louisville, Kentucky, who has just released her fifth and self-titled album of poetic folk minimalism, the first on which she has worked with a producer, namely Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. The other debut comes from Canadian duo Japandroids, who are Brian King on guitar/vocals and David Prowse on drums/vocals. The duo, who hail from Vancouver, British Columbia, have a sound that has been described as 'one part classic rock, one part punk'. They perform a track or two from their third album Near to the Wild Heart of Life.
There is also a performance from Sigrid, a Norwegian singer-songwriter who has lit up the internet everywhere over the last few months with her debut single and potential anthem for all Don't Kill My Vibe.
