Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:听听听听听听听

It was only a snatch, a few notes of a popular song I hadn鈥檛 heard for a long time, but it whisked me back into one of the most moving experiences of my whole life.

I was once a hospital chaplain with responsibility for a ward for adolescents suffering from cancer. It was one of the most demanding (and rewarding) things I鈥檝e ever done. I remember so many of those kids and one, in particular, came to mind when I heard that song the other day.

Daniel was a quick-witted, cheeky, irreverent 17 year old and we got on together like a house on fire. But he was unwell and none of the treatments seemed to help him. So the fateful day came when we knew we must expect the worst. I was present when the consultant had the unpleasant duty of spelling things out. He was ill at ease, searching for words and he couldn鈥檛 look us directly in the eye. Then Daniel took over. 鈥淒on鈥檛 worry doc,鈥 he said with disarming cheerfulness, 鈥淚鈥檝e had plenty of time to think and I鈥檝e worked it all out. I鈥檓 up for it, ready to go.鈥 Then, turning to me, he took my arm and laid it across his mother鈥檚 shoulders. 鈥淚t鈥檚 my mum I鈥檓 worried about Vic,鈥 he said (he always called me Vic, short for Vicar), 鈥淚 want you to look after her when I鈥檓 gone.鈥 It was just like Jesus on his cross, dying a miserable death, asking his best pal John to look after his mum.

When the funeral came, 300 teenagers each laid a red rose on or around Daniel鈥檚 coffin. And then, as we began to drift towards the church doors, a song, that song, was played through the sound system; it carried us to the very doors of heaven. It was Bobby McFerrin 鈥 鈥淒on鈥檛 worry,鈥 he sang, 鈥渂e happy.鈥 Daniel鈥檚 parting gift to us all. Tears streamed down our faces but we didn鈥檛 have a clue whether it was for sadness or joy. All these years later my memories are still warm and upbeat.听 I just know I鈥檝e been blessed by a lad I can never forget.
