Pause For Thought

From Remona Aly, freelance journalist and editor:

The first time my mum and dad caught a glimpse of each other was in the reflection of a mirror. And that was on their wedding day.

It must have been so bizarre and nerve-wracking to see who you鈥檙e going to spend the rest of your life with like that, but I can imagine my Dad, in his head, probably saying the Urdu equivalent of 鈥楽cored!鈥

Back in those days in my parents鈥 native India, the mirror custom was a subtler form of introduction, but for me, it holds profound meaning.

When my father looked in that mirror 44 years ago, it reflected back a truth that he didn鈥檛 yet know - the image was of the one who鈥檇 become the love of his life. The one who was to share the joys of wonderful children (i.e me); the one who was to laugh at his constant jokes, and the one who was to carry him through the final burden of ill health.

Sometimes I catch flashes of how my dad was, and who my mum is, in myself. I鈥檓 not a replica, but the glimmers of them in me are like stars - they light up the sky of my being.

I do believe in the saying that we are all mirrors. When we see goodness, kindness, beauty, we often reflect that goodness, kindness, and beauty back. But if we鈥檙e treated harshly, coldly, then that can be what we rebound. But I鈥檇 rather strive to reflect the God-given goodness that I believe lies in every single soul.

An illuminating piece of wisdom comes from the medieval Muslim theologian and philosopher, Ghazali, who wrote: 鈥淒ear friend, Your heart is a polished mirror. You must wipe it clean of the veil of dust that has gathered upon it, because it is destined to reflect the light of divine secrets.鈥

Mirrors, like hearts, tell hidden truths. If I wipe the veil of dust from my heart, it can shine a spectrum of the human experience - 聽the happiness, the grief, the compassion, the hope, the light, and ultimately - the love.
