Pause for Thought
The Reverend Kate Bottley a Church of England priest in North Nottinghamshire:
Ìý
Like lots of people art lessons for me at school were a bit of a non-starter. Despite regularly being told off for my doodles during maths my attempts to draw charcoal still life's of bowls of fruit and wine bottles were met with end of term reports that praised my effort but not my ability. So I was to say the least a bit apprehensive when recently in the name of ‘Faith in the World’ week I went along to a life drawing class. It wasn't so much the birthday suited model I feared but with the voice of Mr Astle my secondary school art teacher echoing in my ear, picking up a pencil and trying to draw her.
Ìý
I needn't have worried. The room was warm for obvious reasons and so were the people, friendly and kind, there seemed to be no judgement either of me and my drawing or of Zoe perched on the stool at the front. As I drew it suddenly struck me that the very things I am critical of about my own body I found beautiful to see on the model in front of me, a fold of flesh, a curve of a round tummy. And I wondered if perhaps when it comes to seeing what is beautiful I am my harshest critic.
Ìý
Afterwards I chatted to Zoe and I asked her ‘Do you think you're beautiful?’ Without much of a pause for thought she said ‘Yes, but everyone is, just sometimes it takes a while for them to find it.’ It reminded me that while the bible has plenty to say about physical beauty being a gift from God, it also says ‘Man looks on the outside but God looks at the heart’ no such thing as ugly people only ugly souls, we might have an amazing body, a symmetrical face and a wardrobe full of stuff that would make a supermodel weep, but real beauty, true beauty, I think comes from the divine spark in us allÌý and it's up to us to not only see that spark in others but to see it in ourselves. I don’t want to be the one sat on the stool at the front but I did learn something new that whatever I look I believe I am beautiful, look in the mirror and know that you are beautiful too.
