Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

I love rags to riches stories. But rags to riches, isn鈥檛 a story I want to hear until after it鈥檚 done.

Before she became the best-selling novelist of our time, J. K. Rowling鈥檚 life was a mess. Seven years after completing University, her marriage imploded, leaving her a lone parent, jobless and close to being homeless.

What drove the author to success was her positive approach to poverty. Eight years ago she delivered a Commencement address at Harvard University. She bravely pointed out that with hindsight there were precious lessons to be learned from personal failure. The wisdom she absorbed from facing her hopelessness helped her make to appreciate success when it came.

She told the students-: 鈥淔ailure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me.鈥

She鈥檚 convinced that had she succeeded at earlier projects, she would never have found the determination to succeed on the one stage she knew she belonged. Failure taught her lessons about herself she could have learned no other way. After her life unravelled, she realised she was still alive, had overcome her greatest fear and still had a daughter whom she adored, but most of all, an old type-writer and a big idea.

In one Gospel story the disciples, who were expert fishermen, worked all night and caught nothing. Jesus, who was a carpenter and knew nothing about fishing, told them they were fishing out of the wrong side of the boat. They changed sides and netted an avalanche of fish. He then told them to give up fishing for fish and start fishing for people in need of hope. That鈥檚 one reason we have so many Christians today.

In everyone鈥檚 life there comes a time to look at things differently; to face the fear of failure and overcome it; to direct all our energies at what we really want to achieve. As a tweet advised me this week-: 鈥淲hen your life doesn鈥檛 add up, start subtracting.鈥
