Wales Starter
Creative culinary competition. Three of the finest chefs from Wales are competing to be crowned champion. Two chefs are back for a second time.
Great British Menu is back and the nation's top chefs are competing for the ultimate prize - the chance to cook at a banquet held at the Palace of Westminster, in celebration of everyday great Britons honoured by the Queen. In the year of the Queen's 90th birthday, the chefs are challenged to showcase contemporary cuisine and demonstrate the transformation in British food during her historic reign. The 24 chefs competing in eight heats have travelled the country meeting great Britons who have been recognised for their tireless and selfless work for charities, for local communities and for the country.
Today three of the finest chefs from Wales are competing to be crowned champion. Two chefs are back for a second time - Phil Carmichael, from Cowbridge, south Wales, is executive chef at Berners Tavern in London, and Adam Bannister is chef and co-owner of Slice in his home city of Swansea. Adam was crowed Welsh champion last year so this year Phil is back with something to prove. He plans to go home raising the flag for Wales. The third chef is newcomer Andrew Birch, also from Swansea, and currently head chef at Fishmore Hall in Ludlow, Shropshire.
The starters include an Indian love affair from Phil, a modern version of the Welsh stew cawl from Adam and a rather unusual choice from Andrew - cauliflower cheese.
