As events marking the centenary of the outbreak of World War One begin, Clare Balding talks to relatives of soldiers whose faith sustained them in the trenches.

To mark the beginning of events marking the centenary of the outbreak of World War One, Clare talks to relatives of soldiers whose faith sustained them in the trenches. Clare will also talk to Amandeep Madra of the UK Punjabi Heritage Association, who's one of the curators of the exhibition "Empire, Faith & War: The Sikhs and World War One" currently at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS, University of London. The Rev Ruth Scott will be in studio for her regular book review, and one of the books she's been re-reading is Vera Brittain's World War One memoir, Testament of Youth.

Empire, Faith and War: The Sikhs and World War One
Amandeep Madra is Chair of the UK Punjabi Heritage Assocation and one of the curators of the exhibition "Empire, Faith and War: The Sikhs and World War One" which is at the Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London until 28th September. The exhibition commemorates the remarkable but largely forgotten contribution and experiences of Sikh soldiers in World War One.

To mark thecentenary of the outbreak of World War One, Clare talksto Philip Douetil, Cynthia Hardiman, Stephen Vinall andJohn Young,all of whom had relatives who served in the British Armyand whohave stories to tell of how important their Bibles and their faith was to their relatives during the Great War.
