A Slight Trick of the Mind by Mitch Cullin published by Canongate Books

It is 1947 and Sherlock Holmes is 93 years old, living a quiet life in Surrey, keeping bees and writing what he intends to be the definitive guide to the art of detection. The story moves between events in his present life and two significant periods in his past, most recently a trip to Japan post Hiroshima, and further back to a mystery he investigated in his prime.

An Appetite for Violets by Martine Bailey published by Hodder & Stoughton

This is set in 18th Century Europe, the main character is Biddy Leigh a cook at a English Manor House dreaming of her imminent marriage and her plans to set up her own tavern. All her plans are thrown into chaos by the arrival of the new, very young and very spoilt, mistress of the manor who takes a special interest in Biddy. Forced to accompany her mistress to Italy, Biddy, clutching her beloved recipe book, becomes embroiled in a murderous conspiracy.

Personal Pick - Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain published by听 Orion

It鈥檚 80 years since Vera Brittain published her account of her life during the First World War and it is still one of the most poignant and compelling accounts of that time that I鈥檝e ever read. She lost her fianc茅, her brother and two of her closest male friends in the war and she worked as a nurse for the Voluntary Aid Detachment in a almost constant state of near-exhaustion and grief.
