Haydn, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Beethoven
Sean Rafferty with music from the 2010 West Cork Chamber Music Festival. Haydn: Quartet in B flat (Sunrise). Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Figaro. Beethoven: Quintet for piano and winds.
Sean Rafferty introduces the penultimate Â鶹Éç Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert from the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Bantry, a town with stunning views over Bantry Bay in the south west of Ireland. Today's programme features music by Haydn and Beethoven as well as a virtuoso showpiece for violin. The 26 year old Beethoven almost certainly used Mozart's Quintet for the same instruments, K. 452 as the template for his Quintet for Piano and Winds Op.16. It's Rossini's Figaro from 'The Barber of Seville', who receives the virtuoso treatment in the hands he Israeli violinst, Vadim Gluzman in Castelnuovo-Tedsco's violin showpiece. And the programme begins with Haydn's Quartet in B flat, Op 76 No. 3, Sunrise, so called because of the soaring violin melody which opens the work. The quartet is from his Haydn's last complete set of quartets, Op.76, known as the Erdödy Quartets after Count Erdödy who commissioned them in 1796. The title, Sunrise, is reflected in the soaring violin melody which opens the work.
