Award-winning film-maker Mark Dowd goes in search of the real Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI – a man who was the darling of liberals in the Second Vatican Council but who is now the champion of traditionalists.
This journey takes Mark from the papal homeland of Bavaria to the heart of the Vatican itself. He explores how the current clerical abuse crisis has dogged the Pope's mission to combat Western secularism. The programme also features a rare interview with the Pope's brother, Georg Ratzinger, who tells the Â鶹Éç how his brother has been affected by recent scandals.
Mark also profiles the attempts of the Church here in the UK to fashion a positive message about Pope Benedict by training up an army of young religious spin doctors called Catholic Voices.

First Light
The Â鶹Éç's Battle Of Britain Season, marking the 70th anniversary of the most significant air battle in British history, begins with First Light, an intimate drama-documentary that the extraordinary story of Geoffrey Wellum, one of the battle's youngest spitfire pilots.
Wellum was just 18 when he was thrown into combat as a fighter pilot at the beginning of the battle. Seventy years on and aged 89, he is still haunted by the conflict that almost destroyed him.
Based on Geoffrey's personal and deeply moving memoirs, First Light delivers a compelling testimony of his wartime experiences, revisiting the stark emotions and fiery action that dazzled and terrified him as a young man and which changed his life for ever. It is the story of a boy who went to war, and who came back a broken man.
In the summer of May 1940, Geoffrey "Boy" Wellum, driven by his love of flight and a desire to defend his country, joins the RAF's most famous "fighter boys": No. 92 Squadron. Barely out of school and with just a few hours flight training, he has never seen a spitfire close up, let alone flown one.
But no one has time to teach Boy the art of war; the squadron is fighting for survival and he must find his own way through the tension on the ground and the battle he must soon join in the air. As he is plunged into combat, he discovers that the real enemy is not the Luftwaffe but the forces of despair that threaten to overwhelm him. As the death toll rises, Boy withdraws into himself and pushes away those who care for him – even Grace, the love of his life, cannot save him from the darkness that fills his heart.
Thrown time and again into a vortex of terrifying noise, stark emotions and fiery combat, Boy – like those around him – reaches breaking point.
After 18 months on the front line he is a boy who has lost his youth in the most violent and immediate way possible; his spirit broken by a merciless world of kill or be killed. No longer caring whether he lives or dies, he can only be saved by the action of his superiors – who know that if he continues to fly he will face certain death.
Through Wellum's compelling first-person testimony, intense drama and cutting-edge CGI and real-time spitfire flying sequences, First Light evokes a period of great personal sacrifice and the claustrophobic horror of the fighter pilot's cockpit – where terror lurked in every cloud.

The third film in the series offering an insight into one of the most important and stressful decisions a family can make – which secondary school to send their child to – attempts a bold, same day multi-camera experiment, following several of the children on their first day at their new schools.
With unique access to five schools on their biggest day of the year, cameras will capture the experience of the children from the start of the day until they travel home to their nervously waiting parents. Filming at very different schools across Birmingham – from the best grammar school (ranked number 10 in the country), to a new improving Academy that was once rated the second worst school in the country, to the comprehensive where a police officer is sited permanently in an on-site portable building – each of the children will go through this milestone in their own unique way.
Thomas got his preferred choice of school and, although he's thrilled, he's never been on a bus before on his own so it's a big day of first experiences.
Saffiyah is over the moon to have made it into Birmingham's best girls' grammar school and it's likely to be an emotional day too for dad Mohammed, who gave her extra tuition.
Mohsin's family were initially disappointed he did not get into Birmingham's top grammar school but are now happy he's going to a school they believe combines the importance of English tradition with their ethos of hard work.
For Jamiah, there was a difficult few days before he got into his favourite school, which was once notorious and failing but is now making huge strides to change results and perceptions.

Strictly Come Dancing
Strictly Come Dancing, presented by Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly, is back for series eight and kicks off with a red carpet launch show from Television Centre.
The line-up of 14 new celebrities and their partners-to-be walk the red carpet before being paired for the first time in front of a studio audience. None of the celebrities know who their partners are until they're told in the programme.
As well as the new celebrities and their dance partners, seven new dancers will take the Strictly floor on a brand-new set to perform spectacular group routines, with an exclusive performance from the new dance troupe.
The celebrities will perform a group routine and judges Len Goodman, Craig Revel Horwood, Bruno Tonioli and Alesha Dixon return to give their verdict on the runners and riders.

Merlin Ep 1/13
It has been a year since Lady Morgana disappeared and no trace of her has been found, as the fantasy drama starring Colin Morgan, Bradley James, Anthony Head and Richard Wilson returns for a new series.
Just as it seems all hope is lost, Merlin and Arthur pick up a trail. Set upon by bandits it seems they may perish but Merlin's secret magic saves the day. As the dust settles, a mysterious, bruised and bloodied figure approaches the group: it's Lady Morgana.
Camelot rejoices at her return but Merlin is worried that Morgana will remember the circumstances of their last meeting and tell King Uther that he tried to kill her. The King will not understand that he did it to save Camelot from Morgana's half-sister, sorceress Morgause's deadly enchantment; Merlin would be executed on the spot.
Morgana promises Merlin that she has learnt the error of her ways and repents for the evil things she has done. Morgause no longer has any hold over her and Morgana forgives Merlin and promises to keep his secret.
Uther and Morgana enjoy a tearful reunion. The King is delighted that his ward has returned and immediately announces a banquet in her honour. But is there more to her return than meets the eye?
As the evil magic begins to take hold of Uther's mind, Gaius urges Arthur to take command and Merlin begins to suspect that Morgana's repentance is not all it seems. Can Merlin find out what is really going on before Camelot is cast into the greatest peril it has ever known?

It's the aftermath of the shocking incident at Holby College and the Emergency Department (ED) is under attack from the press and the public, as the medical drama continues.
The press have nicknamed the ED "Hellby" and patients are even refusing to be treated there. As a furious board led by Henry demands answers, Jordan is determined to find a scapegoat, unsettling all the staff in the process. Even the highly experienced Tess and Charlie are feeling the pressure. Will the intense public scrutiny pull the team together or tear them apart?
War veteran Leslie and young boy Amir are brought in to the ED with wounds caused by an explosion. As they are being treated, Amir reveals that he found two hand grenades in Leslie's shed and he still has one with him. Amir pulls the pin and the ED is evacuated, leaving just the two of them and Charlie. It's down to Charlie and Leslie to try to stop Amir from detonating the grenade. Just what is the connection between Leslie and Amir?
Meanwhile, unconcerned by the fallout from the college incident, Ruth arrives at work excited about a new surgical job she's applied for. It should be a formality, especially with new husband Edward to put in a good word for her. With the appointment being announced today, could this be the long-awaited opportunity that ambitious Ruth has been hoping for?

Chelsea headed east across London for a derby game against West Ham, now managed by Chelsea's former boss Avram Grant. The champions were held to a 1-1 draw by the Hammers last season with Frank Lampard equalising against his former club from the penalty spot.
Other matches include Arsenal's home game against Bolton, a clash between two newly promoted sides as Newcastle entertain Blackpool and Steve Bruce's return to the DW Stadium as his Sunderland side took on Wigan, the side he previously managed.

Live 'n' Deadly Ep 1/10
Live 'n' Deadly is a new live and unpredictable Saturday morning show presented by action adventurer Steve Backshall with children's TV favourite Naomi Wilkinson. The series is designed to show CÂ鶹Éç viewers that you don't have to travel halfway round the world to enjoy amazing adventures or animal encounters.
Every week, Steve and Naomi pitch up at a different destination across the country in the Live 'n' Deadly truck and, in front of a live studio audience, they'll present a 60-minute show crammed full of animals, adventure, challenges, dares and interaction with the viewers at home.
Steve pits himself against a variety of animals as he attempts to master their skills. Meanwhile, Naomi busts some awesome animal myths in Deadly Sleuth and also meets some deadly cute creatures – sweet-looking animals with real bite.
Throughout the series, a host of celebrity guests challenge Steve to an activity face-off.
In the first show Steve makes a grand entrance when he faces a series of animal encounters with an assortment of creatures.
He is set to get up close and personal with a Burmese Python and handle baby meerkats while Naomi reveals the sinister deadly side to these cute-looking creatures and demonstrates an African spotted eagle owl's eerily silent wings.
In this week's mission, a group of children are sent diving off Skomer in search of monsters from the deep.
Viewers can also get involved via the website during the show and throughout the week. The fun doesn't stop after the show has ended as, every Sunday, Steve visits different cities in Deadly Day Out, giving viewers the chance to get up close and personal with British wildlife, try a new outdoor adventure and meet Steve and his curious collection of deadly animals.

Gabby Logan presents live Championship action from Turf Moor as Burnley take on local Lancastrian rivals Preston North End. The Clarets have returned to the second tier of English football following relegation from the Premier League but boast one of the strongest squads in the division. Preston have endured an indifferent start to their 11th straight season playing at this level but will be keen to put one over their neighbours. This fixture has traditionally produced goals, with 14 being scored in the last three encounters at Turf Moor.

Katie Derham hosts the traditional Last Night festivities as Jiřà BÄ›lohlávek and the Â鶹Éç Symphony Orchestra perform in an evening of great music and vivid colour. The evening begins at 7.30pm on Â鶹Éç Two before moving to Â鶹Éç One at 9.15pm (with both parts simulcast on the Â鶹Éç HD Channel).
Adding the solo glamour are American soprano Renée Fleming and Ukrainian-born viola player Maxim Rysanov, each acknowledged for the excellence of their music making as well as their onstage elegance.
Known for her roles as great operatic heroines, Fleming sings a series of intimate songs by Richard Strauss and what is perhaps her signature piece – Rusalka's romantic entreaty to the moon. Rysanov performs his own arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Variations On A Rococo Theme and movements from Vaughan Williams's rarely heard Viola Suite.
Other works include the première of Jonathan Dove's joyous setting of a poem by Walt Whitman, Tchaikovsky's sun-drenched homage to Italy and there's also an opportunity for the combined forces of the Â鶹Éç Singers and Â鶹Éç Symphony chorus to shine in Parry's much-loved choral ode. All this and the traditional Last Night fare looks set to make it one of the musical highlights of the year.
Viewers can also watch Â鶹Éç Proms In The Park live from Hyde Park via the Â鶹Éç Red Button. These outdoor celebrations, presented by Sir Terry Wogan, feature a host of acclaimed musical stars including Neil Sedaka, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and José Carreras accompanied by the Â鶹Éç Concert Orchestra. The event culminates in a live video link-up with the Royal Albert Hall in London and a nationwide sing-along to the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic You'll Never Walk Alone, as well as Last Night Of The Proms favourites Land Of Hope And Glory and Jerusalem.

Jake Humphrey presents live coverage of the Italian Grand Prix from the world-famous Monza circuit. The pressure is starting to build at both the top of the Drivers' and Constructors' Championship standings and, with just five races left of the 2010 season, there is little room for error.
Race strategy played a key role in the eventual podium places 12 months ago as Rubens Barrichello led then Brawn team-mate Jenson Button home after both drivers entered the pits only once. Kimi Räikkönen finished third but was more than 30 seconds slower than the winner.

Â鶹Éç One presents coverage of the spectacular Help For Heroes, Heroes Concert from Twickenham Stadium, featuring musical performances from artists including Robbie Williams, Enrique Iglesias and The Wanted.
Other musical acts confirmed for the concert include James Blunt, Alexandra Burke, Alesha Dixon, Katherine Jenkins, Pixie Lott, Plan B and The Saturdays.
Hosting the action on stage are some of the UK's top comic names including John Bishop, Kevin Bridges, Jack Dee, Rhod Gilbert, Peter Kay, Jason Manford and Michael McIntyre. There's also a special guest appearance from the legendary Bruce Forsyth.

Leading the search for Britain's Antiques Master is host Sandi Toksvig and, on hand with the key facts and figures is Antiques Roadshow expert Eric Knowles.
Antiques Master has scoured the country's leading museums, antique shops and private collections to provide unparalleled access to the best and most varied artefacts ever seen on British television. The two finalists have to use all their experience, in-depth knowledge and intuition to differentiate the priceless from the worthless in this final round. Tonight's programme features a diamond-encrusted Victorian spider brooch, worth an astounding £15,000, and a pair of Doulton Burslem vases.
The finalists are: Su from Merseyside, whose specialism is Doultan Ware; and Judith from Wiltshire, who has an in-depth knowledge of 18th and 19th-century English porcelain.
Whose passion, skill and knowledge will prove to be priceless and earn them the inaugural title of Antiques Master?

EastEnders – E20 Ep 1/5
Following on from the huge success of EastEnders – E20, a second series of the hit online spin-off drama begins online on Tuesday 7 September, and on TV the following week. The new series focuses on Sol, Asher, Stevie and Naz – four brand-new young characters.
Stevie is found in a crying heap in the middle of Walford; brothers Ash and Sol need a place to crash as they can't go home; and Naz comes to Walford looking for a place to escape. One by one, the quartet meet up until they are all under one roof in the flat above Roxy's beauty salon. All have something to hide – but will living together force these secrets out?
In the first episode, when Asher and Sol find themselves homeless, their quick thinking turns Stevie’s relationship misery into an opportunity. Meanwhile, Naz gets into trouble with Fatboy; cue Sol to the rescue. And so begins the adventures of four unlikely flatmates...
Later, the foursome go to Olly’s party, even though he strictly warns Stevie to stay away. However, Naz, Asher and Sol are surprised by Stevie’s "friends".
Stevie is played by Amanda Fairbanks-Hayes, Asher by Heishma Thompson, Sol by Tosin Cole, Naz by Emaa Hussen, Fatboy by Ricky Norwood, and Olly by Joshua MacGuire.
Series two premières online on the EastEnders website, with two episodes per week which are around 14 minutes long. These episodes can be seen in one omnibus the following Monday on Â鶹Éç Three.
This series is written by the same young writers – all aged between 17 and 22 – responsible for the first run of episodes.

Steve is ill in bed. Or at least he tells his mum and everyone else he is. When Becky, Laura, Shelly and Paul can't persuade him to go out and celebrate, Steve stays in and – with a little help from Dan – makes very good use of his presents.

What would happen if six celebrities in their seventies and eighties went back to 1975? Could just one week of living in the past make Liz Smith, Lionel Blair, Dickie Bird, Kenneth Kendall, Sylvia Sims and Derek Jameson physically turn back the clock; could reliving their heyday allow them to think themselves younger?
Â鶹Éç One sends six well-loved stars back to the badly decorated time of fondue and flares to conduct an extraordinary experiment which will change how people see ageing for ever. From the food to the clothes, the television shows to their day jobs, the group is immersed in the world of their heyday in order to discover the enormous power the mind has over the body, and to illustrate how people age.
Presented by Mariella Frostrup and resident Â鶹Éç One scientist Dr Michael Mosley, The Young Ones provides a refreshing, uplifting take on ageing, looking at how a person's environment can shape the way that they think, and how, in turn, the way people think shapes how they feel. Working with Dr Mosley is Harvard Professor Ellen Langer, who ran the original experiment that inspired The Young Ones.
In the first episode, the six celebrities begin their journey back in time, travelling to their country retreat in vintage cars with songs from the hot summer of 1975 playing on the radio. And when they enter the house they're confronted with the décor of their Seventies past – everything from the carpets and the wallpapers to the food packaging and the vinyl LPs. Their bedrooms are exact replicas of their own rooms – down to the colour of the bedspread and the trinkets on their dressers – but this is just the beginning...
As well as living the Seventies life, the celebrities will be wearing period clothes, reading Seventies newspapers and even speaking as though it really is 1975 – but can any of this really help them turn back the clock? Over a week, these celebrities will do everything they can to turn back time – from playing Seventies video games to tending a Good Life-inspired vegetable patch; from going back to their old work places to taking on the latest contemporary fad – yoga – with life-affirming results.
This entertaining, uplifting and heart-warming three-part series explores the life-changing results of what happens when people question life's only constant – growing old. Episodes two and three can be seen later in the week.

Travelling across the country, Ronan meets three people who have achieved incredible success in their lives.
In 1979 Jack Romero fled the war in Lebanon, arriving at Heathrow airport with just £90 in his pocket. Just fifteen years later, he launched an airline worth £30million. Anne Wafula was born in a remote village in Kenya and overcame childhood polio to become the first black East-African to compete in a wheelchair race at the Paralympics. Finally, David Crabtree went from living on the streets to owning a family care business worth millions.
The winner, chosen by a panel of judges, will be revealed at the end of the programme. Their story will be available as a free download from the Â鶹Éç website and a published book.

At the height of Bomber Command's attempts to batter Nazi Germany into submission, the RAF and the War Ministry came up with a propaganda wheeze: could a Wellington bomber be built from scratch in a single day? Smashing the current 48-hour record held by the Americans, a resilient team of British workers, both men and women, assembled the infamous Wellington LN514 in an astonishing 23 hours and 48 minutes.
Continuing the Â鶹Éç's Battle Of Britain season, Wellington Bomber tells the story of those responsible for this unrivalled achievement – the remarkable employees of the aircraft factory at Broughton, North Wales. Having started on a Saturday morning they worked so quickly that the test pilot had to be turfed out of bed to take it into the air, less than 24 hours after the first part of the airframe had been laid.
At the height of production the factory was churning out 28 Wellington Bombers per week, marking the Wellington as the pre-eminent bomber of the Second World War, with more built than any other British aircraft other then spitfires and hurricanes. Its durability was legendary; many survived perilous flights back from battle with just one engine. Though the casualty rate over Germany was high, particularly in daylight raids, many an aircrew swore by the Wellington's "survivability". With such prestigious accomplishments it is easy to see why the Wellington Bomber's war record is second to none.

Tensions are running high at Waterloo Road as the Fishers struggle to stay united on the annual celebration of Bex's birthday, as the drama set in a Rochdale comprehensive school continues.
In addition, the arrival of a new, gay student sparks confrontation and unearths some difficult truths.
Reluctant to return Lauren's advances, an increasingly confused Josh directs his frustration towards new student Connor with a homophobic insult. But a much deeper issue is revealed when he tries to kiss Finn, who is disgusted with his friend's behaviour and quickly spreads word of it throughout the school. Following a fight, the two friends are forced to explain their actions to Tom and Charlie. However, Josh denies the kiss ever happened, much to Tom's relief, and later tries to prove everyone wrong by getting physical with Lauren.
Meanwhile, the Fishers have their annual celebration planned on the eve of Bex's birthday, an event that causes an explosive divide in the family. Jess finds the celebration morbid, despite Karen's insistence that it should continue, causing Charlie to reveal his true feelings and throwing his marriage with Karen into further turmoil.
Back at Waterloo Road, Vicki struggles both to care for her sick father and to keep up with her school work and resorts to blackmailing Chris with the knowledge of his relationship with Jess in order to get better grades. And Marcus receives a surprising offer from Karen, despite his continuing criticism of Ruth and Jonah's education at the school.
Elsewhere, Ruby and John are running out of options and turn to interviewing potential surrogate mothers – a fact that Janeece discovers, much to Ruby's dismay. However, the interviews are not a success and all seems lost until hope arrives in the form of an unexpected final applicant.

Later ... With Jools Holland returns for its 37th series and its 250th episode with a 30-minute show followed by the traditional longer version on Friday.
Joining Jools on the first show of the series are Manic Street Preachers, who perform tracks from their new album, Postcards From A Young Man (along with a special guest performance).
London-based Klaxons, who made their TV debut on Later in 2007, perform songs from their new Surfing The Void album; the legendary Herb Alpert, whose career spans more than 50 years as multi-million selling musician, producer and co-founder of A&M Records, is in the studio to discuss his career (and is also the subject of Friday night's Legends – Herb Alpert: Tijuana Brass And Other Delights on Â鶹Éç Four) and Mark Ronson & The Business International play a couple of tunes from his upcoming Record Collection set and is joined by a couple of special guests.

The Â鶹Éç will be covering all the key events of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Britain from 16-19 September across TV, radio and online. On television, the live events will be anchored by Huw Edwards with Edward Stourton acting as the host for Â鶹Éç Radio.
Presenters and specialists accompany Huw in each location to provide expert advice on the significance of each of the ceremonies. These include Monsignor Mark Langham, who now works for the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and was the former administrator of Westminster Cathedral; Monsignor Rod Strange, rector of the Pontifical Beda College in Rome; and the Anglican Bishop of Gibraltar, the Right Reverend Geoffrey Rowell.
Â鶹Éç Television's special live programmes begin on Â鶹Éç One Daytime on Thursday 16 September with The Pope's arrival and Official State Greeting by Her Majesty The Queen in Edinburgh. This is followed later in the day on Â鶹Éç Two with a live broadcast of Pope Benedict's first celebration of Mass in Britain at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow, with Sally Magnusson leading the commentary.
The Â鶹Éç will also be covering other events during the Papal Visit on the Â鶹Éç News Channel. Other programmes include Â鶹Éç Four's Vatican – The Hidden World Of God's Servants and Benedict – Trials Of A Pope.

Gareth Malone continues his mission to tackle the gap between girls and boys' achievements in the primary school basics of speaking, reading and writing in the second episode of this series, part of Â鶹Éç Two's School Season.
So far, Gareth has managed to get his class of Year 5 and 6 boys, aged 10 and 11, more excited about coming to school, creating an outdoor classroom where the boys have their own space and giving them regular bursts of exercise throughout the day. And he's worked on their speaking skills by leading them through a debate with the girls at the school, adding the element of competition to spur them on to achieve.
In tonight's episode, Gareth tackles the most fundamental element of literacy: reading. He sets aside the school's usual approach and instead tries to use competition as the key to get the boys interested in books.
Gareth soon discovers that one boy has never set foot in a bookshop in his life, another has never even read a book, and another spends several hours a day playing computer games. The magnitude of his task becomes clear.
Gareth seeks different ways to get the boys excited about reading and takes a group of the less able readers on a mystery trail where they can only find their way by following a complex text. And he creates a team Reading World Cup competition to encourage the boys' competitive edge. For many in the group, the results of Gareth's reading challenge are striking.
This series is part of Â鶹Éç Two's School Season – a range of programming, on air throughout September, encompassing documentary, drama and debate, with additional information at bbc.co.uk/schoolseason. This major season on education focuses on schools and the tough choices parents have to make.

Granada Studios Manchester, 6.55 pm, on 9 December 1960. With minutes to go until the live transmission of episode one of Coronation Street, creator Tony Warren is being sick in the toilets, actress Pat Phoenix is missing ... and so is the cat from the opening shot.
The Road To Coronation Street tells the epic story of one man's struggle to make a programme that no one wanted. Granada's formidable bosses, Sidney Bernstein and his brother Cecil, are not enthusiastic. But together with producer Harry Elton and director Derek Bennett, Tony takes up the battle. He wants cobbles, a pub, seven houses and a shop but above all he wants northern actors.
Led by casting director Margaret Morris and her young assistant Josie Scott, the hunt begins for the legendary cast – Doris Speed, Pat Phoenix, Violet Carson and William Roache. Coronation Street is born.

Richard Hammond's loyal Lab Rats discover a time machine disguised as a portable loo in this week's episode of the science-based game show. It interrupts a cricket game by breaking down in the middle of the crease, leaving the Lab Rats with one option – to ask the fire brigade to move it using water jets. But will the water pressure be enough to lift the loo?
Meanwhile, back in the studio, this week's contestants take part in a spot of Vacuum Cleaner Bazooka Archery. Vacuum cleaners have never looked so good as the teams use them to fire foam arrows at Blast Lab's Plate Wall Of China. The teams score points by cleverly aiming their vacuums and knocking down their own coloured plates.
The programme comes to a gunge-tastic end with the Messy Messy Mess Test – Snot Bots, where the teams must battle against Richard's gunge-filled robots who are suffering from a cold. Each team must insert as many prize discs into the Snot Bots' mouths as possible, taking care to avoid their goo-filled sneezes.

Having been barred from his noisy, disorderly public library for causing a disturbance, Brian Lane finds solace in the old-fashioned, respectful and tranquil surroundings of The London Library, as the drama following a team of ex-policeman brought out of retirement to investigate unsolved cases from the past continues. When he discovers that a membership card is listed among the personal affects of a cold case victim, he wastes no time volunteering to go undercover there.
The Unsolved Crime And Open Case Squad (UCOS) reinvestigate the death of university professor Dr Richard Symes, who died falling from the roof of his college three years ago. As Lane relishes his relocation to The London Library, immersing himself in Symes's specialist field of the history and philosophy of science, Pullman and Standing visit Symes's widow, Paula.
An antiquarian bookseller, Paula is less than happy about the case being reopened. She is, however, keen to point out that while she believes her husband committed suicide, she blames college principal Jeremy Ventham for pushing him to the brink. A conflict of old and new teaching methods saw Ventham axing Symes's department, shutting down the college library and forcing Symes into early retirement.
However, when Halford visits the scene of Symes's death and speaks to Ventham, he learns that the early retirement package was merely a polite way of sacking Symes after discovering he was caught stealing books from the college library. But why would a man so passionate about books and their importance in education steal them? Could Paula's business have benefited from the thefts?
Lane is finding that life as an academic at The London Library isn't all reading, researching and quiet contemplation. He becomes distinctly uneasy in his peaceful retreat when Symes's former colleagues, retired college lecturers Jasper and Sophie Urquhart, take an unhealthy interest in him and his reading material.
Amanda Redman plays detective superintendent Sandra Pullman, with Alun Armstrong as Brian Lane, Dennis Waterman as Gerry Standing, James Bolam as Jack Halford, Beth Goddard as Paula Symes, Jonathan Cullen as Jeremy Ventham, Anne Reid as Sophie Urquhart and David Ryall as Jasper Urquhart.
