Southwell Minster was founded in 956.

The present building dates from the early 12th century.

In 1884 the Minster was granted Cathedral status, when the diocese of Southwell was formed.

The Minster has always been recognised as the Mother Church of Nottinghamshire, and from its foundation, the parish church of Southwell.
