Bricks and fireworks thrown at fire engines

Fireworks and bricks were thrown at fire engines in an attack described as "disgusting".

County Durham and Darlington fire service said fireworks were hurled at crews four times and two engines were damaged by a brick and "other missiles" on Bonfire Night.

No-one was injured, but chief fire officer Steve Helps said one of the fire engines had to be taken off the street, potentially delaying response times.

He added footage from the service's CCTV and body-worn cameras had been passed on to Durham Police.

"It鈥檚 especially disgusting to attack the very people in our community whose job it is to keep people safe," he said.

"In the event of a fire, a few minutes difference in arrival time can mean everything and incidents like this could have a real impact on us reaching the people who genuinely need us most."

The fire service said Bonfire Night was always busy for crews and this year they had received 170 calls between 17:00 GMT and 20:00 alone.
