Your Story: Anne Smith |
|
What was your job and what were your duties when you were 21?
When I was 21 I was an accounts clerk working for Brian Mills. My duties were to keep the accounts of people who bought goods from the catalogue, and also to reply to any letters.
In which ways did you enjoy your work?
I had a lot of friends at work but I didn't particularly enjoy the work I was doing.
How much was the first house that you bought? Where was it and what were the conditions like?
*My first house cost £700.00, it was in Silksworth and it had two bedrooms, a bath in the kitchen with a table which came down over it when you weren't using it and the toilet was outside in the yard. It had two reception rooms, two bedrooms and only one coal fire to heat the whole house, Although that sounds unusual today I thought it was great.
When you were 21 what was your weekly wage and what did you think of it?
My wage was approximately £9.00 per week and that was considered to be a good wage for a woman at that time although men's wages were always more.
What outdoor activities did you enjoy when you were 21 and how often did you do them?
When I was 21 I was expecting my first baby so outside pursuits mainly consisted of going for walks and going to the cinema every three weeks or so.
What was your favourite film, movie star, food or anything else when you were 21?
The favourite things I remember most when I was 21 were the Beatles, Sean Connery and watching Top of the Pops every Thursday night on a black and white television.
What kind of transport did you use when you were 21 and how fast was it?
My main form of transport was the bus and it went at about the same speed as buses go today, however it was much more punctual. I used the bus more as I could no longer ride pillion on my husband's motorbike since I was expecting a baby.
Can you tell me an interesting story about yourself when you were 21?
One day your grandad asked me to go to pick up a part for his motorbike from a garage in Sunderland. It was a very hot day and I had to wait in a very long queue, because of the heat I fainted and one of the men waiting in the queue caught me by grabbing both my forearms and ruined my best coat with his oily hands.
Did you ever have to go into hospital, if so what was it like?
Yes I did have to go into hospital to have my baby and I didn't like it at all, the nurses were very strict and I couldn't wait to get out and go home.
What was your ambition when you were 21 and did you achieve it?
My ambition was to stay at home and have lots of children, I only had 2 and I became a working mother so no, I don't suppose I did achieve it.
