Your Story: Work at Champs

My journey to work involved part walking and partly travelling by bus because the bus stop near my home was nearly double than travelling from the next stop along. The fare was either 14p or 8p.

I worked full-time hours from 9am to 5.30pm with a day off mid-week. We NEVER EVER worked on Sundays. I earned about £45 per week and paid £10 towards my keep. The rest was spent on clothes and going out about 4 nights a week.

I worked with 5 other people who also worked full-time, not many people worked part-time hours in the 1980's. We all wore uniforms. The girls wore black A-line skirts, bottle green polo shirts and V-neck sweaters. Champs was embroidered in gold coloureed thread. The male staff wore black trousers, white shirts and tie and knee length duster coats very fetching I do not think!

CHAMPS was a very modern shop in its day selling all the up to the minute designs in sport and leisure clothing.

I must admit that back then work got in the way of our social life and lie-ins. I would probably like working there more now than I did then. Didn't Oscar Wilde say once that "Youth is wasted on the young"
