Your Story: My Grandad Les at 21

When I interviewed my grandad about when he was 21 I found out a lot about him. He lived in Roker, Sunderland, near the Football Stadium (Roker Park). Most of that year he was in the Merchant Navy working as a fourth engineer on MV Rookley.

That year he went to Australia, China and India. For a holiday he went to Butlins Holiday Camp in Filey, Yorkshire. The main source of entertainment were dancers at Seaburn Hall and the Rink. There were also nightclubs and cinemas. His favourite day of the week was Saturday because of football on the afternoon and dancers on the night. When you were going out a suit, shirt and tie would be your costume. If you were casual you wore a blazer, shirt and a tie. There was nothing of any importance that changed his life.
