Your Story: Interview with Violet

When I was 21 I worked in the Ministry of National Insurance. I got the job by filling in an application form. I only had a few people who were my friends.

I thought the roof was low because at dinner time we used to play table tennis and it was hard to play. I also had another job as a nursery nurse. I thought it was a handful. On Sunday, I used to do Sunday School. I really enjoyed doing it. At the Ministry I worked eight hours a day. I didn't wear special clothes.

On Sundays I hardly got to go home. I only went home for my breakfast, which was either toast or cereal and lunch was sandwiches and fruit. When I woke up I went to early communion at church, then home for breakfast, then back for morning service. We were not allowed to eat anything before any services in church. Some days it was hard. When we got home members of the choir would come come with us and we would all take turn singing around the piano.

I got engaged when I was 21, on my birthday. It was! a good time. It was a beautiful party. They were very happy days. I enjoyed talking to my Grandma about her memories.
