Your Story: Grandad's Memories

The most interesting person my grandad has ever met was called Archie Able. Archie was a very small man in size and weight and was a fireman in the engine-room of one of the ships that grandad worked on, he had lots of tales about his time in the Merchant Navy.

Archie was on the first ship to be sank by the German warship Graf Spee and was a prisoner on the Altmark and after being saved was torpedoed twice on other ships.

Grandad's brother George was in the RAF during the war and squadron was based in Northumberland. His squadron shot down the first German plane in the North, the German pilot was killed and was given a full military funeral. George was one of the pall-bearers he was later killed in Iraq in 1942.
