Leisure time at evenings and weekends were enjoyable movies at newcastle and south shields colour films after black and white television the bowling alley at jarrow was a firm favourite and later franchis nightclub opened upstairs the apprentices ball was the highlight of the year and was held at the mayfair ballroom newcastle we also visited the majestic dances at newcastle and south shields

My mother was chairwoman of the belsfield ladies club and there would be speakers giving talks about interesting subjects there were bus trips out to the country and seaside

I can remember as a small child being taken to the seaside by my grandmother and great aunts even though it was summer they still wore their coats hats shoes on the beach

My father lived at parliament street Hebburn and during the second world war the family home was bombed my grandfather and uncle were killed in the ruins of the house and to this day the empty piece of land that was their home still serves as a reminder.
