In 1963, as the civil rights marches and bus boycotts took place in the American South, England's first black-led campaign against racial discrimination was unfolding in Bristol. The trigger was the Bristol Omnibus Company's open refusal to employ black bus conductors or drivers. Their stance was widely accepted and perfectly legal, even the local leaders of the bus workers' union, the TGWU, seemed complacent. More...
