Hertfordshire's Templar mystery |
|
The spoils of war have never been found in Hertfordshire | There are no remains of the Templars’ Preceptory above ground, but chance finds have been made, including skeletons, a chalice, and the grave slab pictured here. These were found during works to the east wing of the house, which seems to have been the location of the Templar chapel, at some point in the 1880s.
Fine 13th-Century floor tiles were found in the area of the west wing during Lutyen’s work, so the Templars’ hall might have been in this area. Future work will no doubt reveal more evidence of the complex and rich history of this site.
