Your Story: The Harris family in America

My great grandfather John Harris came in about 1850 to live in Merthyr and eventually in Rhymney in South Wales from Pembrokeshire. He had been a farm labourer but was now a ‘rail tapper’ and had moved to one of the iron and coal ‘boom towns’ of the South Wales valleys to improve his lot. He had three daughters and three sons all of whom worked hard to increase their status. My grandfather David and the three girls stayed in the valleys and became respectable trades people, but two of the sons, Benjamin and James went to America. More...
