Scotland's First Jewish Community

The first organised Jewish Community in Scotland did not emerge until 1816, in Edinburgh when twenty families formed a Congregation of Jews. Although Scotland, unlike England, had never passed any anti Jewish legislation, and there are various reports of individuals of the Jewish faith being resident in Scotland for short periods of time, it was not until 1816 that the Community was of sufficient size to establish a Congregation.
