Your Story: St Ives to California in 1871: Sarah Glasson's story

In 1871 Sarah Glasson, 10 years old, with her mother and sisters, left St. Ives, Cornwall, to join their father in California. When Sarah was 90 she was persuaded by her family in California to record her memories and experiences of life in Cornwall and California, and a copy of her memoirs was sent to relatives in St. Ives some 50 years ago. The document lay dormant until a St. Ives descendant sent me a copy as being possible material for a feature in our local weekly newspaper. The memoir is too long for inclusion here, but copies have been lodged with the St. Ives Trust Archive Study Centre and the Sears Historical Museum in Grass Valley, California. This commentary enlarges on aspects of Sarah's experiences and the Glasson family in California. More...
