The Story of Joseph

Joseph was the second youngest of 12 sons, fathered by Jacob. A good shepherd and kind, he was doted on by his father. Jacob even gave him a coat of many colours, to show him his love and appreciation.

Joseph was a dreamer who once dreamt that when he was older he would be a great success - far more than any of his brothers. His brothers - already jealous of their father's favouritism - heard this and decided they couldn't take it any longer. Ripping up his coat, they threw him into a pit. They then sold him into slavery to some passing Ishmaelites. To cover up their deed they told their father that Joseph had died, showing him the shreds of his coat that they had smeared with animal blood.

Joseph was then sold to a wealthy merchant called Potiphar. He proved a popular addition to his household, but unfortunately too popular with Mrs Potiphar. Jealous of her affections, Potiphar threw Joseph into jail.

Whilst in jail, he told people the meaning of their dreams. Hearing of his talent, he was summoned by no less than the Pharaoh himself. Under his pay, Joseph became a rich man.

Meanwhile, his brothers' fortunes didn't fare as well. Famine and plague were widespread so they were forced to flee Canaan for Egypt. Once there they met Joseph, but they failed to recognise him.

Joseph didn't reveal his identity at first. Instead he quickly thought of a plan to test their loyalty and honesty. Providing them with food, he planted a cup in his brother Benjamin's sack. As they were leaving he asked them who had stolen it.

Despite the fact Benjamin had been caught with it, the other brothers took the blame. Satisfied that they were changed men, Joseph then told them who he was. They then sent for their father and the family was reunited.
