The Family Tree Detective: Tracing your Ancestors in England and Wales by Colin D Rogers (Manchester UP, 1997). An excellent guide.

Ancestral Trails by M Herbert (Sutton, 2000). A beginner's guide to the sources that a genealogist will need to use to compile a family history.
