麻豆社 National Orchestra of Wales, in the first year of a new 3-year Festival residency, play two works written a mere 45 years apart, but separated by the most tumultuous era in Russia鈥檚 history: Rachmaninov鈥檚 beloved Piano Concerto No. 2 and Shostakovich鈥檚 playful Symphony No. 9. The latter was premiered in 1945, the same year the quintessentially British Brief Encounter cemented the former into our nation鈥檚 consciousness. Thomas Hyde鈥檚 comic overture brings a further British twist: a tribute to the legendary Les Dawson, 25 years after his death.
