About This Event
The 麻豆社 National Orchestra of Wales crosses the Severn from its Cardiff base in the company of the Norwegian- American conductor Joseph Swensen 鈥 well known to British listeners for his successful period at the head of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. The programme consists of three familiar masterpieces of the Romantic era. The First Suite from Grieg鈥檚 music for Ibsen鈥檚 play Peer Gynt includes the well-known 鈥淢orning Mood鈥 and 鈥淚n the Hall of the Mountain King鈥. Rachmaninov鈥檚 Second Piano Concerto would deserve its universal popularity even if had not been plundered for the film Brief Encounter. We can expect an authentically Russian interpretation from Yevgeny Sudbin, hailed by the Daily Telegraph as possessing 鈥渢he touch of a true master鈥 and by Piano magazine as an artist 鈥渨ho seems destined to take his place among the elect鈥. Tchaikovsky鈥檚 passionate last symphony, the Path茅tique, provides a perfect close to the evening and to this year鈥檚 Mozartfest.
