Event Information:
Towards the end of his short life, Schubert pushed the boundaries of symphonic writing. His Eighth Symphony, though written six years before he died, remains one of the great unfinished works, with just two movements completed. It would have been have been a piece on an epic scale.
With his next attempt, the Ninth Symphony, he succeeded in finding that epic scale and produced a masterpiece of astonishing power and lyrical beauty. Between the symphonies, soprano Ruby Hughes joins the orchestra for a group of Schubert’s songs arranged for orchestra by two composers who loved his music, Reger and Brahms.
