鈥楾he Enigma I will not explain 鈥� its 鈥渄ark saying鈥� must be left unguessed 鈥︹�� So wrote Edward Elgar of his career-making 鈥楨nigma鈥� Variations. What鈥檚 not in question, however, is the tender playfulness of orchestral variations inspired by the composer鈥檚 friends and family, including the noble, much-loved 鈥楴imrod鈥�. Pianist Jan Lisiecki joins Elim Chan and the 麻豆社 SO for Beethoven鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 3 鈥� a Romantic tussle between conflict and lyricism. The concert opens with the European premiere of Noriko Koide鈥檚 silkworm-inspired Swaddling Silk and Gossamer Rain, commissioned for last year鈥檚 麻豆社 Proms Japan.
