Hip Hop....

Producer Kat | 17:40 UK time, Friday, 3 April 2009

...don't Stop. Very excited about Monday night's show - Most Hip Hop - five hour special with Zane and Mr. Tim Westwood. Back to back amazing tunes - and the definitive list of the most important folks as we celebrate 30 years of hip hop.

On Wednesday afternoon, Zane's going down to Maida Vale to watch two of our fave bands record their session right next door to each other - Kasabian and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Pretty rare to have them both in at the same time, and we're filming them...more details later on when they'll be played out on air.

We're just sorting out The Radio 1 Breakfast Show, Zane's in for Moyles on Bank Holiday Monday...and we'll be doing Mini-Masterpieces. Four definitive singles instead of albums. Head mash thinking what they are!

As ever, let us know what music you're getting excited about...we'll catch you on Monday...Kat

Looking fwd to the b-boy business!

    A stack of tip-offs...

    Dubstep:-

Gatekeeper - 'Ignite'...And (Snoop Soggy Dogg take note!) that is how to spit right on Dubstep

    --------

    Ghettozoid -

'Seeking' is dubstep with vocals...but *done right* ;) Immense choon.

    --------

    Kryptic Minds -

Doesn't get much murkier than 'One Of Us', and 'Six Degrees'. Fog thick atmosphere.

    --------

    Tek Step -

Check out 'Street Fighter Remix', and wait for the huge (right) hook about a minute in! Positive that Zane will appreciate those vocal clips! 'Step Off', and 'Bust A Move' are also fat as a pregnant pig.

    --------

    Phaeleh -

'Low' is perfectly named. Rocks da house!

    --------

    Martyn -

These words is possibly the best thing to have come out of the Garage sound. Beautiful work.

    --------

    'SamEssTee' -

'Crashbash' makes a nod to the classic 'Energy Flash' by Joey Beltram, but it's perfect tech-house with a twist of dubstep/garage.

    --------

    Gyu -

Super-tight dubstep/garage. Will shift the a*ses that other tunes can't reach.

    ***

    Miscellaneous:-

    Willie Isz -

    Soaring hip-hop/soul crossover.

    --------

    Eprom -

Might be a touch too out there for the show, but get on 64 Bytes remix, for some seriously dangerous virtuoso mashing up of Hip Hop

    --------

    SUBliminal -

Hear Imogen Heap as never before in this bedroom producer's amazing rework of 'Hide And Seek'.

    --------

    Shooters Tour -

This duo are trying to go against the grain and do something with positively oriented with Hip Hop. They have humour too, and remind me of Jurassic 5 in places, which is obviously a good thing.

    --------

    JimiJames -

'The Future' is R+B Pop, but with stones!

Looking forward to tonight. I'm just going to relax and enjoy it, not get annoyed that my favourites don't feature. As long as Asher Roth isn't on mind you...if that happens...grrr...

Here's my top 5 hip hop tracks that won't be on the show tonight

    POS - Purexed

    Aesop Rock - Daylight

    EL-P - Deep Space 9mm

    Sage Francis -

Prolyphic and Reanimator - Artist Goes Pop

"Deep Space 9mm"...Hell yeah!! Knocks at least half of what was in the 30 out the frame! EL-P is one of the REAL innovator geniuses in the game. His stuff dating back 8 years sounds wayyyyy ahead of what passes for cutting edge right now.

He produced Cannibal Ox's 'Iron Galaxy', which for my stake is THE best hip-hop track ever made, even nudging past 'White Lines'. Production-wise. Flow-wise. MESSAGE-wise (what the hell happened to THAT?)

    Witness the fitness:

What's up fellow def jukie? Good to see some EL-P love. That stuff doesn't get enough credit on the show. Makes me realy annoyed when you see the coverage given to Asher Roth who is clearly a marketing tool.

Iron Galaxy is awesome but I have to say that I prefer Scream Phoenix

  • Comment number 5.

Ey, what it do man? Yeah EL-P has probably been held back by his erm 'difficult' personality in realtion to the biz. Just look at that venom about "Rawkus and Nazis" for example, hehe.

Uhuh, Phoenix is super-fine also, as is pretty much the whole of 'Cold Vein'. A Definitive statement indeed. It marked the start of where Hip-Hop SHOULD have gone. Instead we mostly ended up with empty headed uber-posers like 50 Cent and Lil Wayne :/ *

*Kanye's ok though, even if the size of his ego is threatening to block out the sun.

  • Comment number 6.

True, thing with El-p I suppose is that his stuff always takes a few listens before you fully get it. Doesn't lend itself to radio really.

Kanye's new stuff is dreadful but he is a great pop star. The stuff he comes out with is just pure comedy. Brilliant stuff. Pop needs characters like Kanye.

  • Comment number 7.

Yeah, but then no-one would've dreamed Nirvana would be played on Radio 1 prime time either. Miracles can happen if we fringe enthusiasts rise up, spread the gospel and demand changes!

I give Kanye an easier time cos at least he gives a toss about a few things other than himself. A scarce commodity in Hip Hop indeed. And look how he managed to make golf knitwear fashionable with b-boys, rofl.
