Hottest Record - The Rumble Strips - 'Not The Only Person'

Zane Lowe | 21:09 UK time, Thursday, 30 April 2009

C'mon! Own up...who thought that collaborating with Ronson would have The Rumble Strips touring with a six-piece horn section within three months. Be pleasantly surprised by this timeless H.R, 'Not The Only Person'. What Mark understands is that the Rumble Strips talent and ability is not yet matched by their popularity. As a great producer and A&R man, he has done his best to rectify this. Tastefully. And wouldn't it be a great story to tell in twelve months of how this brilliant band found success and Mark Ronson put another Grammy on the shelf.

jamie_t.jpg

Wimbledon in the house! Say hello again to Jamie T. The man who gave us a brilliant debut album afew years back - Panic Prevention, and has clearly been grafting
his way through album #2. All that hard work has clearly paid off by the sounds of todays HR, 'Sticks n Stones'. Its jump up Jamie T with a chorus thats immediate and sticks around. Expect a lot from Jamie T this year. Live and on record, its exciting.

Hottest Record - La Roux - Bulletproof

Zane Lowe | 20:52 UK time, Tuesday, 28 April 2009

la_roux.jpg

Good ol' La Roux, eh? Still trucking after all these months. All jokes aside, the rapid rise of this electro pop group has been a surprise to all, even the band themselves. Which would explain why there's a lot of confidence in this new single, our Hottest Record, 'Bulletproof'. Understandably so, it's a big pop song and when you consider the success of 'In For The Kill', it should be a shoe in for a high chart placing. That said, why do people like La Roux? Is it their pop sensibility or is it the hint of darkness which is evident in the early tunes. Your call. Give us a clue with a comment. Tomorrow the return of Jamie T. TOMORROW THE RETURN OF JAMIE T.

Hottest Record - Jack Penate - 'Be The One'

Zane Lowe | 20:32 UK time, Monday, 27 April 2009

At the end of 2008 Jack Penate returned with a late contender for song of the year. Thank Goodness, cos it's taken long enough to follow it up. So after near on 5 months of playing 'Tonight's Today', we get closer to his second album 'Everything is New' with a brand new Hottest Record. 'Be The One' is pure pop: a big tune, a dose of Philly soul and just the right side of well produced, making it perfect for our first three each night. This guy has his place in the summer all mapped out. Be there to witness it for yourself. Tomorrow: Brand new La Roux.

Hottest Record - The Phenomenal Hand Clap Band - '15-20'

Zane Lowe | 19:42 UK time, Thursday, 23 April 2009

phenomenal-hand-clap-2009-lg-61157216.jpgHere's another newby in the H.R department. We know very little about the Phenomenal Hand Clap Band. Apparently two producers and a classic collaboration project with people you already know, but right now, let's focus on the tune. An infectious slice of New York noise, this is modern day disco which echos the vintage sounds of Blondie and ESG with some CSS and James Murphy thown in. All good stuff. Check it out, and get ready for Monday's Hottest Record from Jack Penate.

Hottest Record - The Mars Volta - Coxtopaxi

Zane Lowe | 21:15 UK time, Wednesday, 22 April 2009

marsvolta_skivkoll.jpg

Sheesh,
Good luck keeping up with this one. This is where rock and roll gets random in the most brilliant and precise way. The Mars Volta have always forged their own path, built their sense of melody but their craft has often been over looked. This one gets the balance just right, a suitable Hottest Record from a truly original band.
And their records always sound so awesome! Comments please...

Hottest Record - Gallows - Leeches

Zane Lowe | 20:25 UK time, Tuesday, 21 April 2009

gallows.jpg

Ironic isn't it, that Gallows would give us something vibrant and exciting from the album 'Grey Britain'...
On a day when, huh huh, the sun is shining. Bad as that was, that's the good humour you're gonna get about tonight's HR. Gallows channelling all fire and fury in a tune so ferocious that speakers can barely contain. Gee, d'ya think I'm excited about this one? Now you...

Hottest Record - Placebo - For What It's Worth

Zane Lowe | 20:48 UK time, Monday, 20 April 2009

876673148_l.jpg

Stop the Press!
Placebo go funky, complete with Memphis horn stabs and R'n'B revue back up vocals. 'For What It's Worth' is all mirrorballs and soul-claps, it still retains the darkness the Placebo fans find so comforting. As a fan, it's been great to watch this band defy critical damnation and domestic apathy to become one of the world's most rock solid recording and touring acts.

Hottest Record - Enter Shikari - Juggernauts

Producer Kat | 20:29 UK time, Wednesday, 15 April 2009

07320_115323_EnterShikari_L200307.jpgFrom the mouth of Huw Stephens....

A monster slab of frantic, chaotic beats and their usual spectacular riffage along with intriguing social commentary makes this a big record. We had a briliant response from listeners: new fans and their hugely devoted fan base alike. Leave your comments!

Hottest Record - Pryda - Melo

Zane Lowe | 20:45 UK time, Tuesday, 14 April 2009

pryda_muranyi_prydz.jpg

Not to jinx it, but today feels like summer will be a reality this year. Blue skies around Radio 1 and a new club anthem from Eric Prydz, aka Pryda
'Melo', starts of thoughtful enough but as you'll hear once it finally reaches its hottest breakdown peak it is pure hands in the air, the kind of which Pryda has mastered over time. Book your flights, buy your tickets, get in the clubs and witness it for yourself, this is going to be massive! Comments below please...

Hottest Record - Bombay Bicycle Club - Always Like This

Zane Lowe | 21:21 UK time, Thursday, 9 April 2009

BombayBicycleClub.jpg
Another excellent opportunity for us to put another new band on the Hottest Record podium. This band is a regular for DJs like Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens and now I understand why. This is hands down, for me, the best song I've heard from Bombay Bicycle Club so far and we'd like to know what you think. Have a great Bank Holiday, and don't forget to tune in from Monday morning from 7am when we start your morning on Radio 1 with Billy Joe Armstrong, Bono, Snoop Dogg and Kasabian. But sadly, no Andi Peters.

Hottest Record - Asher Roth Feat Cee Lo - Be By Myself

Zane Lowe | 21:03 UK time, Wednesday, 8 April 2009

asher.jpg

Phew. Asher Roth is no slouch right now this is the third piece of new music we've had from this new rapper in the last month. Each as different as the last but with Asher's laid back and confident rap delivery tying them all together, hopes are high for his debut album 'Asleep The Bread Aisle' due out later this year. I keep having conversations with people about the state of rap...is there a future, if so, what form will it take? To be honest, these are the same old questions people asked about rap music when it first started. Maybe its becasue we just celebrated 30 years of Hip Hop culture here at Radio 1 and 1xtra, but I do still find rap music to be one of the most exciting sounding art forms of music there is and Asher is an important part of that right now. Now I shut up. Your turn, leave a comment.

Hottest Record - Eminem - We Made You

Zane Lowe | 21:01 UK time, Tuesday, 7 April 2009

eminem-proof-tattoo.jpg

Finally the return of the Angry Blonde. Not so angry as it turns out, just the usual playful and mischevious first single from a new Eminem album. This one has received a divided reaction, but to be fair, this is the way Eminem has always done it, and I for one am relieved to hear him in such good spirits. The heavy stuff can wait. 'We Made You' is our Hottest Record in the World. Tell us what you think about the return of Eminem.

Hip Hop....

Producer Kat | 17:40 UK time, Friday, 3 April 2009

...don't Stop. Very excited about Monday night's show - Most Hip Hop - five hour special with Zane and Mr. Tim Westwood. Back to back amazing tunes - and the definitive list of the most important folks as we celebrate 30 years of hip hop.

On Wednesday afternoon, Zane's going down to Maida Vale to watch two of our fave bands record their session right next door to each other - Kasabian and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Pretty rare to have them both in at the same time, and we're filming them...more details later on when they'll be played out on air.

We're just sorting out The Radio 1 Breakfast Show, Zane's in for Moyles on Bank Holiday Monday...and we'll be doing Mini-Masterpieces. Four definitive singles instead of albums. Head mash thinking what they are!

As ever, let us know what music you're getting excited about...we'll catch you on Monday...Kat

Zane Lowe | 21:03 UK time, Thursday, 2 April 2009

thexx.jpg

Something brand new and very fresh to round off a great week of hottest records.
This band are the called The XX and if you don't know them, they're from London and it's very early days. But they're sharing resources from White Stripes, Vampire Weekend and Radiohead in the XL extended family. It's just really exciting music and we really like it. Do you?
