The Iraq Study Group Report - An admission of failure?

David Mazower | 12:20 UK time, Thursday, 7 December 2006

Hi there. It's Madeleine here - my first time presenting the programme. Very exciting!! We've just had our morning meeting and even though it's been in the news for a good few hours now, we still feel there is so much to say on the Iraq Study Group's that we're going to devote the whole hour of tonight's programme to it.

Khalid, a listener in the Netherlands, joined us on the speaker phone for our editorial meeting and he certainly felt it was a subject worth pursuing.

So, the question we're asking is, is the report an admission that the US has lost the war? It called the current situation "grave and deteriorating". Is that code for failure? Is this whole exercise a way for the United States government to try and pull out of this quagmire, whilst trying to save some face? Or perhaps you see it as a brave move... reflecting on what is obviously an immensely difficult situation and trying to fix it.

We want to hear what you think of course. We're especially keen to hear from members of the US military. How do you feel about the report, and about its recommendations? If you live in Iraq, or if you're an Iraqi living abroad we also want your views. How is the report being seen in Iraq? What about its recommendations to pull out all combat troops by 2008? A good idea or bad?

Are there other aspects of the report that you think we should be focussing on? Do let us know.

Right, I'm off to do some reading to prepare for the programme. A little nervous but excited to have my first presenting shift on such an important topic.
