Ron i'n synnu I ddarllen [I was shocked to read] in last night's that a Welsh Assembly report on Welsh in schools shows 78.4 per cent of 11 to 15-year-olds in Wrexham's secondary schools have no grasp of the language o gwbl [at all].
Lle dan ni'n mynd yn anghywir? [where are we going so wrong?] I thought things were supposed to be getting better. But the figures speak for themselves. Just 238 out of 6,838 secondary school pupils, and 261 out of 8,935 [26.7 per cent] in primary schools speak Welsh at home.

The great community newspaper the ran an interesting article in this week's edition, looking at the sentences handed to criminals in our local courts.
Under the headline 'Have we gone soft on crime?', it was highlighting the implications due to the UK's prisons being full. The issue could also be used to restart the debate about having a new prison built - especially for North Wales. What do you reckon?

Denbighshire Council has issued a saying the final part of the jigsaw has fallen in place to safeguard the £3.4m project to re-open Prestatyn's Scala Cinema as an arts and entertaiment venue.
It's been a six-year saga for the campaigners battling to save the venue. Are they breathing a sigh of relief or is it more a case of 'we'll believe it when we see it', do you think?

I was impressed to read in that Wrexham fans, through the Wrexham Supporters’ Trust, have so far raised £248,000 towards their target of £250,000 to buy themselves a place on the club's board.
The 'paper reports that during this week's WST forum owners Neville Dickens and Geoff Moss admitted they had stumped up £3m of their own money to get the club out of financial trouble.

The last surviving person to serve as a member of staff to the Yorke family at Erddig Hall has died. Harriot Ena May Davies, who died last week at the age of 100, served as a housemaid between 1925 to 1930, according to which reprints an earlier interview with Harriot.
A big part of the surviving history at Erddig is connected with the staff, including poetry and paintings of them - and the high regard in which they were held.

We've just heard that has applied to council officials to restart a hovercraft service for tourists in Rhyl.
The resort operated the UK's first service - Rhyl-Wallasey Hovercraft - in the early 1960s. A company spokesman says: "Maybe the good old hoverdays will return again." We'll let you know if more comes of this.

I see there has been another case of so-called postcode lottery - where the health service you get in one part of the country is not the same as another due to the way local health officials spend their money.
Lucy Shennan, 36 from Carmel, Holywell, who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, was told she couldn’t receive a drug because of a lack of funding - but Conwy and Denbighshire NHS Trust had a change of heart after the local paper, stepped in.

A new group has been formed to oppose the growing use of wind turbines in Denbighshire. But I thought there was advantages to their use - so much so that I noticed you can buy your own turbine - £1,500 all in - in one well known DIY superstore.
Anyway, Hiraethog Alliance aren't happy about them and is made up of the Ramblers’ Association, two North Wales Branches of Council for the Protection of Rural Wales, People Against Corwen/Cerrig Turbines and Denbighshire Against Rural Turbines.

Rhyl's once-tired and frankly rundown-looking front has been given a fantastic makeover, if the photos submitted by Frederick are anything to go by.
I have to admit a soft spot for the resort which, whilst many say is well beyond its prime, I can still see the beauty in the place - even in the tatty buildings. At last, though, we'll have somewhere decent to sit and eat our fish and chips!
PS. The Denbighshire Council website has been charting the development of the so-called project on the West Prom.

Organisers behind Llangollen International Eisteddfod, the colourful annual world music festival, have pulled off another coup - landing world class tenor José Carreras and rising classical starlet Hayley Westenra.
José needs no introduction except to say he is the last of the famous three tenors to play at Llangollen as both Pav and Domingo have already wowed the crowds before in the pavilion.

It's great being a 'dysgwyr ar hyn o bryd' [a learner at the moment]. We're being spoiled. At the proclamation ceremony much was made of the fact that, more than ever, learners needed to be encouraged.
And as if to confirm that, the Welsh Assembly has given another £62,000 to help fund this year's National Eisteddfod in Mold. According to , the money allowed the festival to "travel to parts of Wales where the Welsh language is not widely spoken as a community language".

I'm no football commentator but I do wonder whether ousted Wrexham FC manager Denis Smith has been treated fairly considering he stuck by the club during its darkest hour and, I heard on Â鶹Éç Radio Wales Good Morning Wales programme today (listen again just after 7.20am), that for two years he had no contract.

Our learners' class at Mold restarted tonight after the Christmas break and, rhaid i mi deud [I must say], it wasn't too bad getting back in the swing of things. The hardest thing, I find, is getting there. This is a self-imposed three hour dosbarth nos [night class] - I've been learning for four years - and this group is great fun. But I need your help!

Campaigners are planning to mount a mass protest to oppose plans for the widening of the A494 at Ewloe & Aston Hill [background info]. The protest will take place outside Deeside Leisure Centre where the plans will be previewed tomorrow by civic leaders before going on public display.

More licensed premises have been caught by police serving alcohol to under age teens, according to . In the latest crackdown eight out of nine premises were caught in Glyndyfrdwy, Corwen and Llangollen. It comes after two pubs in Ruthin and Denbigh were caught out in the previous crackdown a week earlier.
