The 16 young writers longlisted for the £30,000 University of Wales Dylan Thomas Prize were announced yesterday.

For the first time in the prize's history a playwright has been included on the longlist, with the writers hailing from Canada, New Zealand, the USA, South Africa and Somalia, along with five longlisted authors from the UK - but none from Wales.

Judges on this year's panel include Kate Burton - actress and daughter of Richard Burton - and the Gwyneth Lewis, the first National Poet of Wales. Peter Florence, the founder of the Hay Literature, will chair the judging panel.

The prize honours the work of Swansea-born poet Dylan Thomas, who died in New York in 1953, and is open to any published writer in English who is under 30. The shortlist for the prize will be announced in early September, with the prize-winner to be announced at an awards ceremony in Swansea on 1 December.
