Elfyn Lewis wins Welsh Artist of the Year prize

Abstract artist Elfyn Lewis scooped the Welsh Artist of the Year 2010 prize at a ceremony at in Cardiff yesterday.

Lewis, from Porthmadog in Gwynedd, won the £2,000 prize after his son Hamish selected the winning painting Pwll Crochan (Cauldron Pool) when his father couldn't decide which to enter.

The accolade is the second in a year for Lewis, who picked up the gold medal for fine art at the National Eisteddfod in July 2009.

The Welsh Artist of the Year exhibition, featuring the winning entry by Lewis as well as the work of the 100 selected artists shortlisted for the prize,Ìý runs until 6 August at St David's Hall Cardiff.
