A new Welsh film comedy, made in just a three-week period in Cardiff on what the company describes as a 'micro-budget', has enjoyed an impressive world première at the Atlanta Film Festival.

Off-beat comedy is the feature début of writer and director Paul Howard Allen. It follows two hapless psychology students as they each desperately attempt to write 5,000 word essays in the space of 12 hours, in a bid to not fail their degrees.

That gut-wrenching feeling as the realisation dawns that you've forgotten about a vital piece of work is surely something many students past and present can relate to. I know I certainly can.

The film stars James Kristian as Tom, most recognisable from popular Channel 4 drama As If, and his partner in essay-writing crime Steve, played by actor Gareth Aldon, a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff.

The students figure their only hope of completing their assignments lies in stealing the 'holy grail of psychology resources', a folder of course notes belonging to Debbie - the housemate of Tom's girlfriend Sarah. Sarah is played by actor Amy Morgan, another former student at the Royal Welsh College, and Kimberley Wintle plays Debbie.

Writer/director Allen, who doubles as a lecturer in psychology at Cardiff University, said of the film's debut: "We were really excited when we found out we'd been selected for Atlanta.

"'Big Font. Large Spacing' is screening alongside some really renowned films so it's great to receive such recognition after all the care and time we put into the project."
