Three milestone birthdays were celebrated in style at Wales Millennium Centre on 14 November.

Of course, it's five years since the centre opened but a massive concert was arranged to say happy birthday to the composer Karl Jenkins and to mark 10 years of devolution in Wales as well as play a part in the WMC's celebrations.

The concert brought together Sinfonia Cymru, three choirs - Cor Caerdydd, Cordydd and Cantata - with a great array of soloists.

There was the soprano, Rebecca Evans; harpist Catrin Finch; singers Elin Fflur, Geraint Llyr Owen and former X Factor runner up Rhidian Roberts; the virtuoso euphonium player David Childs and a rising star cellist Steffan Morris.

Steffan is 18 and from Neath and this year's Texaco Young Musician of Wales. He's still studying at the Menuhin School and really is a name to watch. In the concert he played the solo cello part in an extract from Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man and, reading in the programme that Steffan fist came into contact with the work only six years ago when he was chosen as a reserve to sing the treble solo in the piece, really brings it home what a young performer he is!

All the music performed was by Karl Jenkins who didn't have a birthday night off as he conducted a lot of the concert. He was later presented with an award - Cymry for the World - as were the actor Jonathan Pryce, tenor Stuart Burrows and (posthumously) Ivor Novello.

The WMC Awards made for a glitzy night among the audience as well as on the stage as actors Sian Phillips, Robert Hardy, Sir Derek Jacobi and, of course, Jonathan Pryce were all there.
