News 24 live

You might have noticed a change at the top of the News website pages today.
In the orange banner next to the Â鶹Éç logo (on the UK edition of the website) where we used to have audio and video links to programmes, we now have a link to a live stream of Â鶹Éç News 24. (The programme links have moved to the right).
We’ve known for a long time that when we make the News 24 stream available on the site during a major breaking story it gets a lot of traffic. We also know that there’s a good take-up for the News 24 video summary.
So as part of our aim to make sure all our key news services are available on-demand, the News 24 continuous live stream will be available from today on the website, whenever you want to watch it.

Thank you! As a British person living in the US I have wanted to see this for a long time. One small problem is that haven't been able to access it all day today. The player launches and then nothing. I have followed all advice on how to view News 24 on the news player but to no avail but I will keep trying. One other thing, surely the banner is a dark red, certainly nowhere near orange!
The little scrolling 'LIVE' text is a little tacky-looking, but I like the feature. Didn't even realise you COULD watch News 24 Live online before...

I am a Brit living in the USA and it is so tiresome that news outlets like CNN.com only report USA news and their international section - laughably - only ever includes 'foreign' news relating directly to America.
It's so great to see that the Â鶹Éç actually reports news from all over the world and in so many different languages.
If that banner's orange, then I need my eyes examined...!

To the American user - Heidi: you may find that you'll have to pay some sort of Realplayer subscription in order to access Â鶹Éç content overseas...
Could I ask where the money is coming from to pay for the bandwidth this is going to use? As a licence payer I hope I'm not paying for those outside the UK to watch it.
As the blog entry says, it is only available to people in the UK. As for the cost, this is simply another form of broadcasting, like TV and radio.
It is a great development, particularly for those of us in areas that cannot yet get a freeview signal.
A great feature, and with Sky supposedly coming off Freeview I hope they'll also live stream their service to give you a bit of competition!

This is an awesome move and one which is going to make such a difference for someone like me who watches the Â鶹Éç news online regularly.
I pay my TV licence, but spend alot of time away from my TV. This will result in enabling me to watch what is such a fantastic public service - the Â鶹Éç news!

Jim-UK: I'm pretty sure the costs of overseas use of the website comes from the grant the Â鶹Éç gets for the World Service.
I'd also like to echo comments above that the animated 'live' icon is tacky!!
Jim-UK, you need to take a lesson from good journalism and get your facts right. Some of us outside the UK wishing to watch News24 online DO pay UK TV licence fees.

Steve, please can you clarify whether, with the appropriate software, I should be able to view News24 online while overseas? We surely have at least an equal need?

@ commenter 3: you can't access it because (as you may notice) the stream is coming from their ACLed server (which checks your IP to make sure it's originating from inside the UK and then uses an Access Control List to deny access to only UK users). This is most likely the only way N24 could stream, by satisfying the requirements of rights owners by ensuring that content was only viewed inside the UK.
There are ways of getting round this system, but they are lengthy, don't always work, and the editors probably don't want me mentioning them ;)
@ 7: You can buy a SuperPass, but if you're a registered user with your address inside the US, you can't stream Â鶹Éç World because it's not available to US viewers due to license restrictions. If your address is outside of the US though, it works (apparently). I don't believe that N24 is available via any Real SuperPass, though I might be wrong (don't have a SuperPass, never have, never intend to).
I'd like to add my comments of thanks to the Â鶹Éç for commencing this permanent N24 stream - a great addition to the online offerings and something I'll watch often! It works great on my mobile device streaming via HSDPA ;)
One request: make the link available on the Â鶹Éç News web site a little more than it has been so far (I only actually saw a link to watch N24 for about 30 minutes before it cycled to another link and all other references to it disappeared!) Course I saved the link ;) but still, if one didn't then it's as good as unavailable...
Yes - it's a minor point, but that scrolling live button is very cheap looking.
Excellent, between this and streaming TV I should soon be able to get rid of my tv and no longer be forced to pay for the rest of the Â鶹Éç I am not interested in.
If enough people do this to hurt the Â鶹Éç's income then maybe the tv tax would finally be absolished and Britain will enter the 21st century.
I applaud the live stream; but only if it is not at the cost of ondemmand videos e.g. of speaches, programs.
One beef 13:25 and the bbcnews website still hasn't uploaded the entire blair resignation speach.
We have a right to judge it for ourseleves and I really feel it should [a] be online in full and [b] be there now (and earlier!).
Otherwise the bbc news website remains my favourite website and simply the most balanced website in the world.
The bbc news website should also consider giving far more prominance to access stats to show the sheer numbers of people (and origin) reading the site. This, in my view, would increase its gravitas yet further.

Im very pleased have waited ages for this service.
I'm a Brit living in the US, and I just wish they would either stream bbc news online and allow access overseas or put Â鶹Éç World on providers all over the country, rather than only New York. I'm tired of the news channels we have (CNN, FOX, MSNBC) only covering news related to the USA. I understand Real Player's superpass is streaming it for everyone outside the UK, but I'd like to get a decent news provider without having to pay US$15 (£7.55) per month.
I'm a UK licence fee payer currently abroad. I understand content provider restrictions, but I really should be able to view the stream while I'm away. Maybe the Â鶹Éç should invest in linking user accounts with license fee payers so that they can view content wherever they are in the world...
