William Crawley | 16:08 UK time, Saturday, 6 February 2010

2009-10_vincent-nichols.jpgThe were some press rumours this week that , and president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, might be created a cardinal sooner than expected. Previously, it was understood that Archbishop Nichjols would have to wait until 2012, when reaches the age of 80 and loses the right to vote in a papal conclave. Now, that Pope Benedict might decide to give the archbishop his red hat before or during the papal state visit next September.

You can listen to a Profile of Archbishop Vincent Nichols on Radio 4 tonight at 7.00 pm, presented by Clive Coleman.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor is one of my guests on this week's Sunday Sequence.

I do not think that we need to hold Vincent Nichols in too much respect.

When the report of the awful child abuse by priests in Dublin was published, Vincent Nichols response was to praise the courage of priests for confronting their past, what a sick response!

Of course Cormac Murphy O'Connor when he knew of priests involved in child abuse, said he did not know what to do with them!-so of course he moved them on to other churches, where they continued to abuse.

According to the various reports ( eg: The Commission Of Investigation Into The Catholic Archdiocese Of Dublin) the Roman Catholic Church continues to give money to priests who were known to have abused children. Even allowing one perpetrator to leave the country, in order to escape justice.

Who cares if Vincent Nichols is made a Cardinal or not, the victims of child abuse will still not give him any respect.
