Clinton aide slurs David Trimble as a "crankpot"

_44285857_james_rubin.jpgJamie Rubin, a former assistant to President Bill Clinton, and now a member of Hillary Clinton's campaign team, has dismissed David Trimble as a "crankpot". Mr Rubin was responding to Trimble's comments about Hillary Clinton's claim that she was "instrumental" in the bringing about peace in Northern Ireland. Lord Trimble had previously suggested that Senator Clinton's claim was "a wee bit silly". Rubin, a former spokesman for the US State Department, slurs David Trimble in an interview with MSNBC (watch ).

Samantha Power, one of Barack Obama's foreign policy advisers, was forced to resign from his campaign a few weeks ago after describing Mrs Clinton as a "monster" (in what she hoped would be an off-the-record comment). The Clinton campaign may be under some pressure to distance itself from Rubin's attack on a Nobel Peace Prize-winning politician who served for four years as Northern Ireland's First Minister.

Re #1- Thanks for that, I'm sure William was not aware of that before you pointed it out.

On this Rubin comment, who the hell does he think he is? Calling Trimble a "crankpot"? If you're going to slur someone, jackass, at least use a proper slur. This comment is difficult to defend, at best. And as for Hillary being an "instrumental" part of the peace process, I can only snigger into my coffee at the mere suggestion. This campaign of hers is getting more and more desperate.

It's a curious slur, as John points out. He may have meant "crackpot" or "crank", then accidentally spliced the two terms together in his head before inventing the term "crankpot". It's what used to be called a Bushism.

Gb- You've just issued the highest possible insult to any Clinton aide with that "Bushism" comment. Ouch!

Well said, poster Helman. Some now say that Hillary Clinton is trying to bring down the stronger Democrat, Barack Obama, so that she can run against a weaker incumbent, (even) older Republican, McCain, in 2012. The Terminator or Dracula metaphors, which have no place in a civil discussion of politics, are hard to avoid.

Will, I see that the Belfast Telegraph has picked up on this story and are running it in their late edition (i.e., after you wrote it up here). It may just be coincidence, but the Telegraph reporter's language is remarkably similar to your text in this post. The Telegraph article is titled "Clinton aide calls David Trimble a 'crankpot'", and the piece begins:

"A former assistant to President Bill Clinton has dismissed David Trimble as a "crankpot". James Rubin, now a member of Hillary Clinton's campaign team, was responding to Trimble's comments about Hillary Clinton's claim that she was " instrumental" in the bringing about peace in Northern Ireland. Rubin, a former spokesman for the US State Department, made the attack during an interview on MSNBC (video below)."

Of course, it could just be a coincidence, right?

Its entirely predictable that a man would go on live television and say something he knows to be totally false for purely propaganda reasons. Trimble spoke the truth, just like one of the SDLP's negotiators. This liar is a disgrace. Although all the candidates tell bare faced lies, apart from Ron Paul, Clinton's crowd are definitely the biggest culprits.

Jamie Rubin should be made to apologize to David Trimble for calling him a “crankpot “ he is a typical American politician they still have no idea who we are or what we have come through in N Ireland. David Trimble served N Ireland well and took some very brave decisions. Hillary Clinton did nothing for the peace process here despite what she says and with someone like Jamie Rubin on her side well need I say more.
