Verity Murphy | 13:03 UK time, Saturday, 24 April 2010

Tonight we have a special Saturday edition of Newsnight hosted by Jeremy Paxman - at the much earlier time of 6.20pm on 麻豆社 Two. Here's what is coming up:

Jeremy will be discussing the events of the day - and the week - with the politicians Harriet Harman, Theresa May and Simon Hughes.

He will also be joined by the comedians Rufus Hound and Ed Byrne, and by novelist and editor of The Lady magazine, Rachel Johnson.

He will be talking live in the studio to Nick Griffin, the leader of the British National Party (BNP), who launched his party's manifesto on Friday.

And Justin Rowlatt has a report from Barking where Mr Griffin is standing to become the constituency's next MP and where the BNP is aiming to win control of the local authority.

We should add of course that BNP members are not the only candidates in Barking and you can see a full list of those vying to be the next MP and a full list of those standing in the council elections .

Plus we will have the latest animation of how the campaign is unfolding from Apple Daily - the Taiwanese TV team whose past political films and "reconstruction" of the Tiger Woods car crash became an online sensation.

Join us if you can at 6.20pm on 麻豆社 Two, or failing that the programme will be available afterwards on the 麻豆社 iPlayer, and highlights will be appearing on the Newsnight website.

It is going to be a MAJOR edition tonight Jeremy v Nick Griffin! I predict viewing figures to be sky high :o)

I find these 'invited audiences, mix of politicians and celebrities much less valuable than the direct interview. It is much too easy for all to get into 'playground' mode and 'my dad's biggerer 'n' your dad' rot. Hopefully JP won't be too tired (a 5 day week indeed just on NN projects) to manage the 'slithy tothes' so the audience has a chance to hear the points being made.

BUT WILL I LEARN ANYTHING OF SUBSTANCE?

I could, more or less, write the answers these politicians will give - REGARDLESS OF THE QUESTIONS.

And as BYT says - the 'comedy relief' does confirm the pantomime brief.

Why not ask party politicians - to their face - 'what part does the rosette play in canvassing?' my MP was in the town today, saying 'vote for me'. Surely he meant 'vote for my rosette'?

I was wondering, BYT, how he was coping. Hopefully, with the sun shining and the birds singing, the political and celeb guests will be relaxed enough not to give him too much hassle and it is in their interest, after all, to reach audiences rather than put them off adding to their already low esteem with the public.

9 days the sun has refused to present sun spot and we now have the Nazis being interviewed by Paxman - coincidence - I seriously doubt it. What ever the Hell next will the pathetically weak 麻豆社 do ?

No sun spots = all round insanity - howling wolves at full moon, vampire fascists on the mainstream. I say buy as much silver as you can, 365 pairs of underpants then barricade yourself at home - eat garlic - loonies are coming. Everyone is now challenged by sanity.

Just the same agenda that's forcing onto the GBP wall-to-wall cover 24/7 on what the 'Big3' are saying, doing, promising, so that we ignore the real changes offered by the minor parties and independents.

I HOLD NO BRIEF FOR EITHER OF THEM

But when Paxman interviewed Griffin, one had a good command of a difficult brief, and the other was a stumbling, overpaid, pretentious wally.

  • Comment number 10.

Was that dumbing down or what?

20 minutes of even more repetition about the fact that the Big 3 are not doing anything today, followed by 10 minutes of attempts by GP to trivialise a minor party's proposals, followed by childish Taiwanese animation and a couple of commedians of no consequence giving us the benefit of their opinions. You Can't be SERIOUS!

  • Comment number 11.

I watched tonight's Newsnight, and even if some people were not able to watch it live, many will be watching later on iPlayer or would have recorded it. Nothing wrong with that. Besides, if it was put on the 8pm slot, it would have clashed with Britain's Got Talent!

Outstanding interview by Jeremy with Nick Griffin - pity we couldn't have had him on for a longer. I'd been waiting to see that interview all day, and I wasn't disappointed. Good to see the local people of Barking & Dagenham being interviewed too, as well as Billy Bragg on air.

:p and naughty Ed Byrne asking Rachel Johnson (Boris' sister!) if she would prefer a multiple Cleggasm. Priceless.

It seems to have gone well for JP. He looked relaxed and everybody seemed on good behaviour. Stupidly, I missed the first 10 minutes and couldn't quite get into it, being on top of that affected and fighting 'pudsey' symptoms. I should imagine you understand what I'm talking about.

I see that pudsey promoter, i.e. barriesingleton, is now 'dreaming' of 10-year old girls. What a 'fine' pair those 2 are.

The BNP haven't got a useful working brain between them, therefore easy for Nick Griffin to look plausible with all the other idiots he has surrounding him. It would appear that the BNP is in need of a Stalinist style purge before it can present itself as a serious democratic party. They are obviously living in cloud cuckoo land to include mega expensive proposals for a 200 Mph " Mag-Lev " trains in their manifesto when the said speed can be achieved with " new line conventional rail " and integrated into the current system ?

INDIGENES AND HARD WORKING FAMILIES - AND THERE'S MORE!

Now which Newsnight genius gave poor Jeremy the job of haranguing Griffin over defining 'indigenous'? Is there still a DENSA award?

Life is littered with indefinables, my small-minded, backroom, media-studies graduate. Take; 'HARD WORKING FAMILIES'. Are you sitting comfortably? You shouldn't be! How hard is hard? What constitutes work? And the daddy of them all: WHAT IS A FAMILY? (let alone: how does a family work).

In the Paxman Cameron interview, Paxman questioned conservative ideology (capitalism)but did not point out that British industry was destroyed in the 80s and 90s as part of the then conservative government's plan to break the power of the unions, particularly in mining and manufacturing industry. It was the conservatives who destroyed British industry; there was little left by the time Labour came into power hence excepet the financial sector.

Thatcher enticed council tenants to buy for peanuts as 'a price worth paying' to stitch potential strikers into mortgages. I have never seen this put on record.

.."a joke that has gone too far".

they boast the selection process selects the brightest and the best.
clearly the have been living on past glories for many years now? ever since the FO became ideological promoting regime change and democracy through military means?

the selection process must select moral relativists and nihilists? so is it any wonder there is no rationality for the Good?

and no one is sacked. For it to be approved to be sent out the line manager must have seen it and saw nothing wrong with it? which suggests the nihilism is institutional? in the real world such a collapse of 'core customer service' [in this case not creating international incidents] wouldn't be tolerated. but then the FO is not a job but a club.

the evidence of vexacious wars, human rights issues, iran tub thumping etc is the FO is out of control and has been for many years?

A dancing quote from Alexander Herzen for consideration by statists and pudsey bears:

'Idealists are cowards about facing the truth; you push it away, you're afraid of facts that don't fit your theories. You believe that there is no salvation for the world except along the paths you have found. What you want is that the world should, out of gratitude for your devotion, dance to your tune, and, as soon as you realise that it has its own step and rhythm, you feel angry; you're cross, you despair. You haven't enough curiosity to watch it doing its own dance'.

Oh, Mistress76uk, there are quite a few of us who think likewise. You should have worked it out by now. The man is spoilt for choice.

However, my main concern and preoccupation has been his wellbeing as a WHOLE HUMAN BEING.

Here's another quote from Alexander Herzen regarding ethical relativism:

'Egoism and social sense are not virtues or vices. Both have to co-exist: without both there would be no history, no development, but either the scattered life of wild beasts or esle a herd of tame troglodytes. Kill the social sense in man - and you will get a savage orangutang; kill egoism in him, and he will become a tame monkey'.

CHOICE DELIVERED WITHIN THE WESTMINSTER LIE IS ONLY 'CHOICE OF LIE'

Nick Clegg was 'impressive' with Marr (except when 'gallery-edge' decreed an ultra close-up that, even on my 14" TV, SHOWED HIS MAKE-UP).
Now why would they want to do that?

But Young Nick was still banging on about 'choice' while neglecting the need for REVOLUTION. Nick and chums, comprising the LibDems, are toadstools of the WESTMINSTER ROT. They are alien to our world - aliens who cannot survive outside the artificial atmosphere of that place. No leader, emergent from any party that can thrive in Westminster, is going to eradicate that block to democracy-with-integrity. Change - REAL CHANGE (:o) - will come from outside; logically, it has to.

IS MILIBAND GOING TO TAKE THE STRAW MAN'S CROWN?

I always think Jack Straw does APPALLED, sickeningly well. His whites come out far whiter than Tony's ever did, even though he sees no difference. There is not an 'ist' bone in that pure body - nor indeed, soul.

But Milliband D is gaining rapidly - he has the eyes for it. Jack's eyes - let's be honest - cannot match that double olive stare from the Miliband countenance. I have only ever seen eyes like that on cult leaders, and the odd Messiah.

Anyway - Milliband D is appalled (with gaze) about the Pope jokes; and Britain's claim to civility is in safe hands.

You're probably asleep now, BYT, but I thought I'd recount an experience I had earlier today:

Having cycled back from the Globe, past the Anglesea Arms Pub that I sometimes call the Blue Moon, and having purchased all kinds of reduced goodies from the local M&S, I carried on towards the Battersea Bridge, York Road and Wandsworth. However, I felt so desperate to go to the loo that on the way I stopped off at a very smart bar with all the bags hanging out off my shoulders, etc. I really must have looked a picture.

I asked politely whether it would be possible to use their loo and a young lady, without batting an eyelid, very kindly and with a smile said that it was no problem at all. On my way out, battling with all the bags sliding off my shoulders, I tried to disappear as quickly as possible but it was all smiles with the barmen calling me 'madam'.

A most heart warming experience it was, Brightyanthing.

'Whether the wisdom of relativistic perception is of any use in establishing peace in the world is still a matter of distant future. I believe that the highly commendable degree of tolerance between individuals, fractions, nations and religions could possibly help.'

I remember as a young child being bothered by people or groups of people unable to communicate, competing with one another and not really getting any wiser for it. It obviously isn't always like that but when it's bad it's really, really bad.

However, imagine a situation whereby a female is caught up between guys competing for her. Should she give in to each one of them in turn or does she have the ultimate right of choice? No theory or supposition or whatever fits every situation.

Did anyone watch Simon Reeve last night? I see the Chinese are quietly taking over Laos it appears, nothing like cutting down rainforests to build big concrete hotels and gaming centres. Governments colluding, and the poor getting nothing as usual.

I was talking to a very experienced tiger man at Howletts yesterday. He says the Chinese want the international ban lifted on harvesting Tiger bones. The Chinese have many thousands, maybe 5, kept in captivity in appalling conditions, starved, it doesn't matter how much they weigh, they only want the bones and skin.

The Siberian Tiger is almost extinct in a major area of it's range. It's now been renamed the Amur Tiger, as it's only in that region of China they exist now, maybe a thousand wild tigers left in the world.

He also told us a German chemist was making Tiger bone by genetic engineering, just having a sample of Tiger blood. Apparently it's very successful. The Chinese say that it isn't the same as real Tiger, and doesn't have the strength, so they totally rejected it. The Chinese have now started to kill off further animals in the tiger group, namely Clouded Leopards and Snow Leopards. My question is what will the Chinese do when all the breeds of Tigers are extinct?

THE UNACCEPTABLE USE OF UNACCEPTABLE (#37)

That needed posting Junkk. It winds me up too. It has that bland PC quality about it. We have stopped saying 'abhorrent', 'despicable', 'disgraceful', or just 'rude' (my response to a street-Christian, who told me I don't hear God because I don't listen).

It becomes particularly enraging when Hilary Benn intones it from on high, like some wise owl who would not dream of ogling London. (Pellets wouldn't melt in his mouth!)

    JUST CALL ME SPLINTER-BUM (#40)

You highlight another incapacity of HomSap Lizzy. Once we have a group identity, that imprints - de facto - on every new-born, we instinctively cling to, and defend, the group. When 'events' impinge to displace the group into the midst of another, the last thing we do is assimilate! It is no accident that Hitler turned on Jews and Roma. The awful truth is that this is what Nature would do - indeed it is Nature at work. Once again, the Ape Confused by Language cannot cope. The basic Ape just gets rough, but the over-cerebral ones stand round deploring.

Perhaps when we demolish Westminster, we can decree that all MPs live on Roma sites (just let any of them try messing with the women there, or Harperson tell them Motherhood is crap!) Sorry - getting facetious because I don't have any answers.

Once again, we see the need for wisdom. Wise solutions can be sustainable; mouthing "Britain is a tolerant nation" merely invites a punch in the mouth.

    How's that for fence-sitting?

Its replacement monarchism and that's why the recent conflict in the BNP between Collett (arrested for threatening to kill Griffin) and the champagne National Socialist leader is symptomatic of their history.

Labour really are getting bizarre with Elvis impersonators and now a claim that the Lib-Dem bubble has burst.

Yet if the Ipsos-Mori poll is taken out of the poll of polls (as its trend seems to be heading in a different direction to the other polls) then they are pushing the Tories for first place.

Brown has the third debate and contrary to the "substance" image of Brown he will get whupped.

It would be incredibly hard for Cameron to avoid PR if he cannot explain why if the party with the most votes is the Lib Dems they should get the third most seats.

If he tries to avoid PR or looks as though he may renege I hope the Lib Dems cut them loose.

If there is a second election then the Lib Dems have nothing to lose as otherwise they are cemented into opposition.

I am not sure the public would be any more inclined to blame them than the Tories if a deal cannot be done.

I applaud Alan Johnson who came out and consistently continued his support for PR.

But perhaps that shows the internal splits within the BNP may lead to a new influx into UKIP - who themselves only recently dumped Wiffin.

Yes I did ask if it were possible to re-educate the chinese, but was told it was their "culture!". They have killed Tigers for many thousands of years, as we know the chinese were far ahead of us, especially with homoepathic cures. They won't change anytime soon.

I hope when people here go to a Chinese herbalist, they think very carefully about what they are buying, and do they really know what's in it. I see they have already invented a couple of new drugs to replace Mephedrone. What makes anyone want to take any chemical from china is beyond me, they managed to kill and damage many babies with their "milk" formula, and other parts of the world with their toothpaste. If items like that are so badly made, who'd ever take so called "legal highs" from them?!!!

As I've said before don't worry about paying pensions to a huge group of old people, current generations won't survive into old age!
