The Air-Raid Shelters Beneath Our Feet

Like many other large cities in the UK, there are a series of air-raid shelters beneath the streets of Manchester. They're usually sealed off (and we wouldn't recommend gaining entrance yourself as that would probably be illegal and dangerous) and long ago forgotten.

Thankfully, doesn't tend to forget so I came across an old post I'd originally missed that points to a forum post where you can find of some of the shelters under our feet.

My favourite has to be showing a Manchester City Police poster with a list of rules for those using shelter.

They are fascinating. I think the ban on insobriety is a little harsh. What if you were in the pub as the air raid began?

I used to be a housing officer in Hulme, responsible for the old red brick properties on Hunmanby, Humberstone and Rockdove Avenues. Each block had long cellars running the length of the street, and apparently these were used as shelters. While I was there one of them flooded - a whole street full of water! Took a lot of pumping. I'm not convinced they ever got that water out.

Both my and my parents houses and both of them small air raid/Bomb shelter in
the garden.

Apparently they where built during ww2.
Now they serve more as sheds, we have often thought of demolishing them, but
just in case the russians attack...
