Cornwall's vote on AV referendum will be declared separately

Graham Smith | 11:29 UK time, Saturday, 19 February 2011

At some point in the early hours on Friday 6th May we will find out Cornwall's verdict on the question of whether or not to change the voting system for Parliamentary elections. County Hall officials tell me that once the ballot result, with counts at two locations (as for the general election) has been communicated to London, it will be announced locally.

This is potentially quite interesting, although perhaps not as interesting as I had first thought. Recalling the 1975 referendum on the Common Market, I set out to see how Cornwall voted 36 years ago. The answer is that 68.5% of people in Cornwall voted to stay in, 31.5% voted to come out and the turn-out in Cornwall was 66.8%. Almost exactly the same figures as for the rest of the country.

For some reason I had always thought Cornwall had been hostile to the Common Market - but clearly I was wrong. In fact, only Shetland, and the Western Isles, in Scotland, voted to leave.

Ukippers, and other assorted BNP in blazers, make a lot of noise in the Duchy, as well as the West Country of England, but that's about it.

  • Comment number 2.

TheCornishRep yes it’s called a democracy, all the parties you mention and add MK are merely feathers in the wind. For all the noise on the internet the people in Cornwall are very moderate, liberal and judicious in how they vote, perhaps more than any other English county.

  • Comment number 3.

Taking any bets on whether the Electoral Commission can have proper systems in place that guarantee one person-one vote certainty across all constituencies of the UK in time to fend off the prospect of legal challenges to the validity of any BOGUS REFERENDUM result should it by any long chance actually occur in May, Mr Smith?
Media professionals delving into the background to that query may care to refer to Mr Smith's other recent blogging on the threat to one person-one vote democracy in the UK posed by uncontrolled and unscrutinised multiple electoral roll registrations by individuals across multiple UK constituencies here:

  • Comment number 4.

Is it that "multiple home owners" buy "multiple homes" specifically to affect local and national election results?
Or is it a that those who refuse to believe that democratic elections reflect the will of the people, need a lame excuse to support their cause?

  • Comment number 5.

Genuine one person-one vote elections that accurately, precisely and verifiably reflect the will of the people don't actually take place in the UK, Slimslad, as you will realise if you take on board what Mr Smith has discovered through all the hard work he has done on the deficient quality of UK Electoral Law, UK Electoral Rolls and UK CERO powers of scrutiny and their inability to deliver one person-one vote democracy in their current condition.
The 'cause', which is being engaged in by people across the political spectrum, is the introduction of fully fledged, genuine and verifiable 'free and fair' one person-one vote democracy to the UK - no more, no less. Who wouldn't want that.

Readers of this Â鶹Éç Graham Smith blog interested in why the proposed AV v FPTP Referendum proposed for May 2011 can only be, if it should actually and unwisely take place, a BOGUS REFERENDUM - thanks to the abject failure of Mark Harper MP, Liberal Democrat Conservative Party Coalition Government Minister for Political and Constitutional Reform to establish the necessary electoral, legal, regulatory and supervisory framework, conditions and means may also wish to read Mr Smith's considerable and sustained work on the subject via :

  • Comment number 7.

Or maybe you are the only one obsessed enough to be bothered.

  • Comment number 8.

    Well, apparently not, Dtr.
You appear to be well out of your depth on this subject and your crude and misleading attempts at minoritisation concern on the issue is neither relevant nor reflective of the facts.
In addition to Mr Smith's excellent and tenacious investigations, serious concern about democratic franchise inequalities of voting power and influence and grossly distorted and inaccurate multiple property ownership skewed electoral registers across the UK is felt by many and extends across the political spectrum.
Andrew George MP - Liberal Democrat:
'Surely it must be decided where people's primary residence is, rather than where they occasionally reside. People with second homes-and third homes, and fourth homes-have a significant advantage over all other voters, in that they can choose where to deploy their vote most effectively.'

    Sarah Newton MP - Conservative:
'What recent representations and discussions has the Electoral Commission had with the Deputy Prime Minister regarding the real problems associated with second home(sic) voter registration?'
    Source:
    Lord Teverson - Liberal Democrat:
'Will the Minister make sure that that is clarified for returning officers, and will the Government take steps to ensure that people are able to vote in national elections only where their main residence is located?'
    Source:
    Lord Tyler - Liberal Democrat:
'My Lords, returning to second homes(sic), I wonder whether, since the Government have so rightly emphasised the importance of getting equity between the value of votes, they should address this issue of giving some people two votes, while everyone else, including those of us who are allowed to vote in whichever elections, have only one.'
    Source:
    Lord Campbell-Savours - Labour:
'Does not the Government's decision to set their boundaries on the basis of the December 2010 register, which includes this flawed material on second homes(sic) and the registration of voters, further confirm how the data that are being used for boundary setting are just unacceptable and should not be used?'
    Source:

    So. There you have it.
BOGUS ELECTORAL REGISTERS = BOGUS REFERENDUM.

My computer seems to have found a new dimension in space n time, because no matter how I try, I am unable to see what the above comments have to do with Graham comments, just another excuse for the sheep to bleat the same worn out hate induced old trash.

The subject is AV. The rules already exist to prosecute anyone voting twice, which to this date, nobody has provided any evidence that such a crime has taken place, if this is your biggest worry in life I envy you. I do not see many people thinking this is critical. The returning officers are charged with ensuring elections are fair, if they are unable to do this then bring in someone who can. Easy as.
