Liverpool Lantern Company Annual parade
For the past couple of years (with various partners) have held a Lantern Parade through Sefton Park on 31 October. They're about to embark on a new one. Want to know more or even get involved?
It's a huge community project involving groups and artists from all over Liverpool - not only to make the intricate and very beautiful paper lanterns (some of them are huge) and then to wear them or carry them during the parade but also to participate as dancers, singers & musicians. There are installations, set theatrical pieces, a specially composed score and some text. The text may be sung or interpreted through the performing mediums but either way it is created to accompany the theme of the parade. This year that theme is 'The Displaced'. Looking at regeneration and various streets/areas of Liverpool under demolition or where the community is being moved out either temporarily or permanently. I've been asked to work with some other people - a community project who have been collating stories & a documentary film maker who is interested in recording the history of the communities.
The Liverpool Lantern Company are in the process of creating a leaflet of some kind which inform people about the project and will give them the opportunity to offer up little anecdotes, poems or stories about their streets and the people who have lived in them. It's important that these stories are told and remembered. In this 'everyone' for themselves culture it's good to look at how we got here - the journies people made and the journies they are about to embark on. Being displaced - for whatever reason- can be a traumatic experience. We have ties with the places we have come to know as home. If you've lived in a particular street for twenty or thirty years no doublt you'll have some stories to tell. The Liverpool Lantern Company would be interested to hear them. For those of you who didn't make the last Lantern parade - check out their web -site. They finish the parade with an absolutely gigantic finale involving fireworks & music. It really is quite spectacular.

Illuminations. There's a delight in marching with others. The human race has never grown out of it. It's nice that it hasn't.
Enjoyed the procession and the side performances -they were lovely and/or interesting, but the finale was not visible and was a big disappointment. Really missed the magical atmosphere of previous years around the lake where everyone could see. We saw lots of families leaving early because they felt excluded. Impossible for small children to see.
Why did you change a winning formula? It was all a bit of a damp squib this time because there were no good viewing points. Even the 'procession people' obscured the view of spectators and it was all a bit self concious and too long drawn out.
i took part in this years festival and it was a real experience. im a drama student at edge hill and this was part of our assessment. i was rather disapointed that we couldnt get the crowd involved more in our piece (demolition) but all the same the audience had a great time and we all thouroughly enjoyed the evening. xx
This was the first time that I've performed in the Liverpool Lantern Festival, let alone attend! I am a student at Edge Hill University and taking part in the festival was a part of out Community Performance module assessment.
I was involved in one of the small side performances, the giant Monopoly board. It was a real experience and I'd like to say a big thank you to everybody that was there in attendance. The procession went well and although it was difficult for everybody to see the finale, it did actually go extremely well, so well done to everybody involved.
The support received for all colleges and universities, as well as the Liverpool Lantern Company, was great, and hopefully you enjoyed yourselves.
