New double CD of the late, great Peter Bellamy

Mike Harding | 13:17 UK time, Wednesday, 27 August 2008

If you want to know how good a singer the late and great Peter Bellamy was, then get hold of the new double CD from Fellside Records, 'Fair England's Shore'. The twin CDs hold all the tracks from Peter Bellamy's first three albums; 'Mainly Norfolk', 'Fair England's Shore' and 'The Fox Jumped Over The Parson's Gate'.

The tracks are digitally remastered and sounding absolutely brilliant. I listened to it twice through the day I got it and was reminded instantly what a great singer Pete was. A very individual voice and one that is not, at first, an easy listen, but none the less the contact and feel for the songs runs so very, very deep. It's a tragedy that the man is no longer with us because I'm sure that, in today's more liberal folk climate, he would be coming up with even more excellent music. My next job is to get hold of 'The Transports', the folk opera he wrote and produced. I still have it on vinyl somewhere but of course I no longer have a record deck. On with the search.

At Cambridge there was a cd available of the Transports. I've loved it for years and have just persuaded my daughter to listen. She was bowled over. With the aid of a turntable with a usb gizmo and a piece of clever software I am gradually transfering all my vinyls, including The Transports, onto my PC and then to disc. I miss those crackles and skips on the cd versions. They help remind me of when I learned to love tranditional music of all kinds at Manchester University Folk Club in the 70s.
