Blog - U - Like.

Chris Evans | 11:45 UK time, Wednesday, 15 June 2011

Good morning friends and thanks for blogging on. So, how are you liking Jake Humphrey in for Jonny Saunders?

I cannot thank him enough for stepping in to cover, but why was there any need?

Where is our normal King Of The Locker?

Jonny will return on Friday, and all will become clear. You would be hard pushed to guess what he's been away doing, in fact if I didn't know, I wouldn't have guessed in a million years.

The blog will be open for posts again from today. Hurrah, we're back.

Christoff, you have just warmed the cockles of my heart, I knew you would be back.

    Morning Chief Blogmeister.

See - I KNEW you'd be back sometime soon.

So what's Johnny up to then? Is he working behind a bar at Ascot, serving Pimms to the masses? Is he taking part in a circus training workshop? Is he moonlighting for his local radio station as their guest breakfast presenter?

Can't wait for all to be revealed!

And I think I may also write a new blog today. It's been a while and I'm feeling somewhat inspired AND inspirational.

    Mange tout, tout!

CLP - Welcome back, you had me in a right panic for a while there, I must say, I am thoroughly enjoying Jake in the mornings, although it will be nice to have Johnny back where he belongs, my guess for where he is, is that is has something to do with Strictly, or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

    Have a great day everyone.

a new blog - thank you CLP - much apprecaited!

  • Comment number 41.

    Hello everybody - I'm back.

Well that was different... going north and crossing the Arctic Circle (got a certificate and everyfing...). It was a nice holiday despite the cold (2 degrees when we got the the north of Iceland and there was snow on them there hills - there was even a bit of sleet on the ship...).

Invergordon (the next stop after South Queensferry) was a nice little town with unusual murals (or muriels as one of my fellow passengers called them) on a lot of the corners. I took some pictures on my phone, when I remember how to download them I will put them on faceache.

Lerwick was next (getting chillier). This was most memorable for a local lady standing at the end of the ramp and shaking everybody's hand as they arrived - saying welcome to Lerwick. As there were 3000 people on board and the majority took the tender boats across (if the waiting times were anything to go by) thats a heck of a lot of hands shook......

Then we had a restful day at sea followed by a stop at Akuriri (sp? pronounced like Tipperary according to the ships guide) this was where the snow was.

Next day Rekjavik (sp? again - I know I should look these things up before typing) where we tried some of the local firewater in an Irish pub. It was a bit aniseedy but as the pub only had enough for 1 shot the barmaid gave it to us for free.

2 more days at sea (I won $100 on Bingo and we won several more quizzes - mini radio anybody??? we seem to have accumulated quite a few...)

The final stop was Dublin where we walked up and down Grafton Street and saw the statue of Molly Malone. There is a lot of performance art going on along this street - busking, human statues etc. My favourite was a man standing still in a walking position with his tie wired to look as if it is being blown in front of him and his hair gelled back to look as if he was walking into a strong wind. Of course we had to sample the local falling down water starting with the letter G. They're right that it does taste different there....

The last day was at sea and we arrived back in Southampton this morning.

Surprisingly there were no dramas, ash clouds, hurricanes or anything. Perhaps the jinx has been lifted.....

    I hope everybody is well.

    Back later.

Some more important pop songs -

Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley and the Comets, released in 1954, it was the first big Rock and Roll hit.

Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan. Marked the time that Dylan "went electric" at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. First released in 1975, it was the first great pop video.

  • Comment number 55.

    CLP - good choices

  • Comment number 56.

I hope nobody minds but I've come on here to have a rant.
    I feel so angry!

In my back garden there has always since about 1975 been a lovely fir tree half way down the garden on my side of the fence (the fence which Bingo very kindly erected for both them and us.) It brought the most lovely interesting wildlife to our garden, i.e. squirrels, a pair of doves and many birds. In fact I was only sitting on my bench out there this afternoon enjoying the peace and tranquility.

Fred next door has often said he would like the trees chopping down, I have always politely and understandingly agreed that he is welcome to saw off any branches which go over their side of the fence.

Well I just went into the kitchen to make a cup of tea and I was so shocked. My lovely fir tree has GONE! Chopped down! Without even mentioning a word to me, never mind having the courtesy to ask me. I heard the saw earlier and presumed they were simply sawing off a couple of branches. There were three lads doing the job, unqualified of course and what a mess they've made, sawdust all over my plants, etc.

I haven't got the strength to go and tackle them as all I want is peace and quiet in my own home. I know that they've broken the law by chopping down trees in someone else's garden but what good will it do now. The lovely tree has gone together with the wildlife.

And so my view now when I sit on the bench is a stump, their old shed and the community hall where the kids gather on the fire escape during the summer evenings.

    How wonderful!

    MM xxx

  • Comment number 57.

Maddy, how awful! Get Bingo to phone the police if you can't - you're right, they've broken the law.

    xxxxxx

  • Comment number 58.

Maddy I am not surprised you want a rant. How utterly unthinking and selfish of your neighbours. Trees are wonderful in anyone's garden but especially for someone like you who can't always get to parks etc to view them. To have someone invade your garden is awful and I am sure you should report them to somebody - maybe the council?

I really feel for you and hope this doesn't affect your health. Take care xx

Hi to everyone else - so lovely to have a new blog.

They've done this when Bingo has just gone on holiday from today, whether this was planned I don't know.

    MM xxx

  • Comment number 60.

Maddy, they're horrible people, and Susan's right, you should report them. Isn't there anyone who could contact the Council/Police for you? They really shouldn't get away with this.

    xxxx

  • Comment number 61.

In fact I'm going to phone the police and ask what the situation is. It won't bring the tree back but they shouldn't get away with it.

    MM xxx

  • Comment number 62.

Good on you Maddy. Let's know how you get on.

    xxxx

  • Comment number 63.

Maddy ,i'm so sorry to hear that ,and yes they def have broken the law they are only allowed to cut back to their boundry and no further .

Don't let them get away with it ,and If I was you ,when bingo gets back ,get hime to plant you anothe tree Just a little further back from your fence so that they wont be able to touch it.

I'm feeling angry for you as Susan has said it's your pleasure he's stolen from you .

    Bids.xxx.

  • Comment number 64.

    MaddyMoon

I have never involved myself in the personal stuff that goes on on here but this time...

First off, don't get stressed about this as it could lead to a relapse. As you say the tree is gone and you can't bring it back. That is not to say that you can't do anything about it.

I assume that Mr Next Door knows that you are not well and may well know that your son is away, hence the timing. So, bide your time, get advice from the Citezens Advice Bureau, wait until your son gets back and then take action.

As the Sicilians say "Revenge is a dish best served cold".

As the last resort a nice line of Leylandii should do the trick!

    Adios amigos

    MC xxx

  • Comment number 68.

Well I called the police who arrived pretty quick. They have broken the law and I am quite within my rights to prosecute but I'm not going to. Fred like me is not in the best of health and his wife suffers with Altzeimer's so I wouldn't do that to them and also it would not bring back the tree. They were out at bingo but the police spoke to the daughters and the three men, who told a story about it having been arranged between them and Bingo which I know to be a lie. When I was in hospital Bingo said that Fred had said he wanted the trees chopped down, Bingo replied "my mum doesn't want them chopping down".

Anyway I feel better for talking to the police who were also shocked when they saw what had happened and also for letting my neighbours know exactly how I feel about the situation.

    Hi everyone:

How wonderful - it is not a dream that Chris wrote a new blog yesterday, thanks to our lovely MwK alerting him that the previous blog was just about to close for posting! We would have been scuppered otherwise, for sure!

Loving the "Simon Mayo blog vibe" that's been going on with the Most Popular Pop Songs: I suppose it's been left to me to suggest ... Never Gonna Give You Up!

mtd: nice to see you back - sounds like you had a lovely holiday.

Deebee: I didn't know KatyMac was due to have surgery. Please pass on my good wishes to her - I'm sure all the love from Simon's blog will really help her. xx

Thanks for the wee birthday wishes yesterday for MrS. I think he had a very happy birthday - favourite gift being a family-size packet of Maltesers from MsS!

Maddy: just awful what happened to your tree. Unforgivable behaviour on your neighbour's part. Well done for contacting the Police, and I am sure your neighbours were quaking in their boots when the Police arrived. I think Concerned gave you some excellent advice - Leylandi is the way to go!

    Hope everyone is ok.

Debee, thanks for letting us know about Katymac, hope she gets well very soon.

Maddy, that's awful about your tree, I'm glad you've done something about it and good luck with the Leylandii planting.

Took Mum and Dad out last night for Italian meal as it was my Mum's birthday, I didn't have any cash on me so I paid with my debit card (including the tip), then I happened to ask the waitress if they get their tips and she said, if it's on the card machine they don't get it, that's shocking isn't it, so I will not be doing that again.

    Have a good day everyone.

Chris, so random I love it. I listen everyday on my journey up from Sussex to Surrey and this morning in particular was so blaze. The music hey, The Specials Ghost Town, to Country and Western, to Morrisey and over to the Detroit Spinners. Beats all commercial radio stations who play the same old stuff day in day out. It was only me and the boys who had to get up and out this morning and now it's raining!

It's going to be a long day, I can tell!

Good song suggestions coming through - wonder if any will be on the list?

Loved Ghost Town this morning - Singing along in my bedroom I was!

Hi Gail: you would be amazed at the amount of restaurants that do not give their staff their tips. I would love to name and shame them, but I'm not in the mood to be moderated today! Absolutely shocking as you say, and these people should be ashamed of themselves.

btw: it only feels like 10 mins since you last said it was your mum's birthday - where did that year go?!

Just a quick thought, any one heard from Debs yet this morning?

Should we be raising a search party yet? Y'know, ringing round those place Debs never wants to go to again type thing? ;-)

Either that, or seeing if she's still clinging to her seat having come over all giddy from the combination of the height and That being Taken!
