Well, not so bad as I thought.

Chris Evans | 14:54 UK time, Thursday, 4 February 2010

Ice Hockey - yesterday - sure it was painful, but so far throb-o-meter only registering a six out of ten.

More aching than anything else, although am assured stiffness will definitely set in come the morning.

Jonny Sports Locker is already suffering with his neck he says, and the more I think about it, the more I can feel MY neck muscles beginning to creak.

We're always told it's the day after the day after that's the worst...and they're always right.

The one advantage about having to play hockey yesterday, was that it took both mine and Jonny's mind off the actual skating. A lesson that could be employed on the ice rinks of Great Britain perhaps?

By the way, is it ok for me to say 'love the show' about my own show? Because the honest to goodness truth is - that I do.

The whole team does, it really is the best job we've ever had. It just feels so comfortable, like a Savile Row suit - and who would turn down one of those given the chance?

Anyway, ta ta for now, but please read the PS.

You can say you 'love the show' and so do I Chris, great stuff!

Give it a couple of days and you will feel more pain after hockey, it always takes a while to kick in, sorry to say but true :-)

    Keep up the good work!

Glad you lived to tell the tale Christophe. Great show this morning, especially Moira's giggle and the excellent "Long Train Running" which has been in my head ever since.

    Hi Chris,

I am loving the show too, you sound as if you are really enjoying the Breakfast slot. Obviously a 'morning' person. As I said in the last blog, someone has been picking out some fabby toons for the show this week. David Jacobs is such a gent, and Tinsel and I would love to hear that Shine song again. Quite uplifting!

    Chris,

I must say, I was quite relieved to hear your voice this morning! And poor Jonny, bless! You will both be feeling QUITE a bit of pain tomorrow, might be an idea if Tash and MrsS give their respective husbands a wee massage .... oooh, er!

Chris, it is perfectly ok for you to say you love your own show - what's not to love? It is a joy, just a joy. And can you please thank Mr Jacobs for that fantastic track this morning. Me and MrS loved it, made the journey into work so lovely!

    Love, Chrissie xx

P.S. Simon seems to be loving his show too, so it's win-win all round!

  • Comment number 10.

    Chris,

Next time you see Simon, could you please ask him to set easier themes for the first tune on his show? Triangles, I ask you! Been driving me mad all day thinking of tunes with a triangle in!

    Thanks, Mcw x

  • Comment number 11.

My dad used to play the triangle for the birmingham symphony orchastra - jnr divsion - is that a bit top tenuos?

Thought of you and your Dad when Chris played 10cc this morning.

  • Comment number 13.

MCW - thanks - I wished I heard it now - I hope my dads not reading this - he might be a bit worried about me (to be fair, as hes my dad hes been worrying about me for years :-) )

its not a great time for a lot of people I know at the moment and I managed to quite badly be out of order yesterday - and I haven't had a chance to make it up to them yet and I feel really bad about the whole situation.

  • Comment number 14.

Chris, We love the show too, although I'm not too sure about the megaphone bit, good chance to do my hair then!

Well done to you and all the team

Baggy, am sure you will work out how to make things all ok

Baggy: sounds like you are really beating yourself up over something. Obviously, I don't know the particulars, but I would say to you that all you can do is apologise - let them know it is sincere - and then try to "put it to bed". You can't undo what has been done (I've been there a million times) but please try not to be too hard on yourself. We all get it wrong sometimes. Usually our loved ones understand.

Chrissie (who's hoping she's not talking rubbish).

  • Comment number 16.

    Chrissie - thanks - I am - I just hate upsetting people

I just sent an email to my collegaues starting 'my job decsription neither mentions being a cleaner or a mug' and goes on to complain about the state of the kitchen.

hmmmmmmmm - that might not be the best way to make friends :-)

  • Comment number 17.

Baggy, seems like that worrying is in the job description for Dads!

As to the other, and tell me to go away if I'm stepping out of line, if its someone you know, they'll understand it was out of character. When you get chance to explain things, hopefully you'll feel much better and the air will be cleared. It's the mulling over and worrying about situations which is horrible. It seems Dads aren't the only ones who have the monopoly over worrying!

Baggy: I see! Well, then, if that's the case it sounds like people have been taking advantage, and you cracked! Once again, been there a million times! On one auspicious day, when I had been pushed to the limit, I stood up from my desk and shouted "just to check, does anyone want any ironing doing?!". Oooh, I was seething!

Chrissie- I would love to have been a fly on the wall when you said that!

I'd adopt the same tactics as I used to with my teenagers- let things get really stinky and smelly. Leave a basin full of dirty mugs, no milk and no sugar etc. When they want a drink- they have to wash up their own mug.

    Some people are so selfish....

Christoph what you and JS need is a good soak in a nice hot bath tonight - that will help reduce the aches and pains. Can't wait to see the video. Of course it's alright to love your own show - wouldn't be much good if you suffered doing it now would it. We all love it too (except the megaphone bit gets on my nerves).

Max has been put on the gifted and talented register for three of his subjects so we are over the moon.
A lot of it is do with the teachers he has this year.
I know that I'm biased and am sure that Boleyn will back me up on this.
But a good teacher is worth their weight in gold and they really should get more credit.

As for the gifted and talented register. Had this been around when I was at school, I would have been a dead cert for:

Hi, I watched the Terry Pratchett lecture the other night. I've never even tried to get into his books, although I know many who are fans, but I was very interested in how he would make his case.

What overwhelmed me was they way one man's eloquent, poignant and controversial thoughts, even when spoken by another (the excellent Tony Robinson - he got it exactly right) could mesmorise his audience for so long. More to the point - that he had Boleynman and myself totally silenced and jaw droppingly in awe of his way with words, especially his use of humour.

In these days of x factor-type audiences whooping and screaming if anyone so much as opens their mouth (anyone watching "Pop Star to Opera Star? I LOVE the programme but the audience drives us nuts), it was a reminder of the power of the pen and the well-chosen word. The room was silent but for a few chuckles.

Whether or not you agree with what was said, the way it was said (and delivery), was faultless. And yes, a few tissues to hand may be a good idea (the bit about his Dad got me as it reminded me of mine), but no hysterical blubbing, save that for X factor!

Chrissie, didn't realise you were taking in laundry - I'll pay youre fare and throw in a packed lunch if you'll come and do mine.

Howaya chaps. Am finally back, in one piece an' wit me marbles in place; and am most relieved Podge & Rodge On Ice are too, albeit registerin' code red on the Stiff-O-Meter.

Rips, don't sell yourself short, my friend. I agree about the value of a good teacher; you only had to hear Chris with Mister Hildich for affirmation of that. But for a child to be happy at school and to thrive, as opposed to being driven, he has to be secure and happy at home. And I don't need to know your family to see that's the case. This is why, primarily, I love this blog. Because there are so many of you who are what I aspire to be, proud, loving, accepting and inspirational parents. And grandparents, Thunder. It's vital, and key to a healthy society in my view.

Now then. I say am finally back; I've actually done the Knutsford trip again today. Owing to the fact I left me lovely cashmere scarf in Bazs car, and woke up to a nice text this morning to the effect that 'Guess what. It's still slushy here, wheels of the Range Rover spinnin' like mad; and what do yoy think got us right outa trouble. Your scarf. You didn't want it back did you?'

Now then you might think 'e's kiddin; but this is the psycho that is Baz, an' in fairness, he's still waitin' on an opportunity to retaliate for the destruction of 'is new map of Holland. In short, a couple years back, I had to take rather a lot of stuff over to Ireland, and therefore I had to take the van, leavin' my car at Baz's. Naturally, Baz was delighted and immediately began windin' me up with texts such as 'Have I done a bad thing, lending your car to Joe?' (Joe being the local alcoholic), and 'That cheeky b****rd Matt has taken your car to Paris..' etc. Now, I have to say that I play along with this nonsense because Baz is only happy when he thinks I'm vexed with him. He hates me being too relaxed and comfortable, see; and so I let him think I'm very cross, or he'll continue to look for something until he really does.

Are you with me.. Anyway. Back I land a week or so later; and, indeed, the car is not quite in the place I left it, but hey, I'm thinkin', he's probably used it. That's fine. Until I'm drivin' off in the bright sunshine and pull down the sun visor. And down drops a map of Holland. Oh hahaha, thinks I. The sun was very bright, though, so I reached over to the glove-box to get me sunglasses... and there is a passport. Baz's passport. Hmmmmm...... Not even Baz would leave his passport with ME, and he was due to go to Spain at the end of that week. (Not that he EVER knows where his passport is, like; his missus is driven to apoplexy before practically every trip with 'im.) So I pull over. 'Right Bazzer.' went the text. 'Who exactly took my car to Amsterdam, and tell me the truth or the passport gets it.'

So after a lot of argy-bargy, I refused to turn back and arrived home with the passport and 'is map. It was a lovely brand-new map, all sorts of useful information on it, marvellous. And just right for makin' paper dollies. You know the ones, the ones you used to make at school with a long concertina of paper. So snip, snip, snip; I haven't had such a good time since Manchester Poly and the Industrial Design module.

Naturally I finally did return the map an' passport (after makin' 'im sweat for a day or two), and what was really sweet was that Baz had his mates round that day, and had bin' showin' off about nickin' me car. So I handed it to him. 'Ere, Ray, look at this map,' says he, delighted, 'It shows all the different...' and the paper dollies drop down. Everybody fell about laffin', but livid, 'e was. Nearly put 'im in hospital.

Happy days. Actually it didn't end there. The next day I found a piece of map on the floor so I shoved it in a brown envelope and addressed it to Baz with newspaper letters an' a demand for a bonus.

So am lucky it was the missus who found me scarf. Or it would be catchin' squirrels by now.

Rips - so glad I read the blog - breakfast it is

the thing about Terry Practchett - as a livelife fan on his work and after meeting him twice I would love to watch the show, what channel was it on and I can I watch again?

    Evening each

Ice Hockey Chris? Now there's an accident waiting to happen. Glad you've only got achey bits and not a broken leg.

Had stepdaughter staying over last night so just washed the duvet cover etc for the second time this week. My spare room needs it's own diary.

Opened the patio doors last night for a wee puff and YET MORE BLEEDIN' SNOW!! Most of it gone now though thank goodness. Hope everyone else's has as well. Am getting seriously miffed at this weather.

Deevs: Got your card, have a wonderful time settling in.

    Good evening bloggers.

I love Clodagh's posts, they always make me laugh!

Waiting for a T*sco delivery & tea almost ready, you just know the delivery man will arrive just as I get the first mouthful.

CSN - thanks, all the snow's gone now thankfully!

I've never read a Terry Pratchett book either, but loved the lecture all the same, actually, as a confession, I've not read CLP's yet either! Just don't get time, or enough quiet time, I should say!

Annie, hope your snow goes quickly

Buffpot, that'll be sod's law then....

I watched the Dimbleby Lecture the other night, thought Tony Robinson was excellent and Terry's writing was wonderful. Alzheimers is in my family and listened to the statistics on the News about NHS spending on people with Dementia with great sadness. It's an illness which has little government support, although Alzheimers Scotland do a wonderful job up here, as I'm sure the English organisation do as well.

Annie, my Dad has it, and it has meant I've lost contact with him, as he is no longer able to speak on the phone. We will need to go down south soon to see him, but it's hard to arrange...his wife doesn't speak to me...

He arrived at the last mouthful, good timimg.

I didn't see Terry Pratchet but I saw my grandmother suffer from alzheimers. Very sad. I hope some kind of treatment is found.

Cheryl and Nic the beginning starts now.... all best wishes to you both. Your romance reminds me of me and mr loli, we "met" at work although we had never actually met. North South divide and long distance relationship.

    We are now married.

JG: What a sad situation you're in. I worked for many years with people with Dementia and their families and I think it's so hard for families to cope with, an awful illness. All you can do is hold on to the memories.

CSN: Stepdaughter is 22 and stepson is 21, I've known them since they were 3 and 4. Even though their dad is now with someone else, they are so loving to me and the rest of the family. We all love them dearly.
