Punk rock and its practitioners have always taken a great pleasure in non conforming when it comes to what 'proper' musicians expect. So The Door And The Window's version of Part Time Punks makes the original by the Television Personalities sound like The Boston Symphony. Was it a reaction against musicianship ? I think so and I agree. 'He's a great guitarist' is a sentence that I don't really appreciate. So what ? Johnny Ramone is a great guitarist, but that's because he invented that style. No other contenders for the title are invited. Sorry Joe, Mick, Steve and all the rest.

ÌýStarting tonight with the Flamin' Groovies finest four minutes which I first heard on a compilation LP with the uninspired title 'New Wave'. It had a photo of a young man spitting out a mouthful of beer, an early attempt to attract the youth demographic, but we didn't mind as it was extremely difficult to get your hands on actual punk rock records in 1977. Mail order or what the man in Ken's records had on the shelf were your onlyÌýoptions, so a "Various Artists" with Richard Hell, The Damned andÌýThe RamonesÌýachieved near religious status among my chums forÌýa few weeks. Also tonight, a happy birthday to Suggs. Fifty years old. It happens to us all. The lucky ones, anyway.

Three songs with the word Saturday in the title - a lazy way to choose music or a well thought out theme for a segment of a tightly controlled fifty five minute show ?Ìý The truth is that it started with the Sons of Adam song, another highlight of the 'Where The Action Is' box set , which found itself beside one of the great Jam songs from 'Setting Sons'. The third is by Coventry band The Flys, whoÌýrecorded one of the great late punk singles 'Love And A Molotov Cocktail'. I loved it since I heard it on John Peel in 1978. A couple of years ago I loved it so much I went out and bought the CD.Ìý Let's say it was the outstanding highlight on the CD. Overshadowing the rest. The tallest poppy.Ìý ButÌýÌýSaturday Sunrise isn't bad.ÌýIs thatÌýdamning with faint praise ? Sorry.

Do children still bring their Christmas presents into school when they go back after the holidays? Maybe it was only in my infant school it happened, but I felt a bit like that this week with two songs from a great box set I received from , not Santa, but my sister in law Denise. 'Where The Action Is' is a subsection of the Nuggets factory, concentrating on Los Angeles bands between 1965 and 1968. When you consider that even then, LA was a place where artists drifted towards, you'll imagine that they have a wider range of recordings to choose from than, say, Derry. And they do. Tonight features the Premiers, who will be familiar to any Nuggets owners as the people who brought you 'Farmer John'. Pronounced 'Pra-meers' , according to the chap who introduces them on that fake live version recorded in 1964, they had two brothers in their line up, Lawrence and John Perez. All the best bands have brothers - Stooges, Kinks, Ramones. "Get On This Plane' owes more than a nod to a Phil Coulter song 'I Can Only Give You Everything'. But they changed one note, which was probably enough to keep them out of court.Ìý
